IMO you should avoid telling friends you ever *carry* a gun unless absolutely necessary.
You can convince people to try shooting a gun, and of the merits of keeping and bearing arms, without going into intimate detail on your own pistol packing habits.
I am guilty of this myself, as the two or three main friends I see know I carry pretty much 24/7. I wish they didn't. I don't tip my hand for ego boosting reasons like some, but more because I have given these folks the pro-RKBA speech (successfully, I might add). Still, you have more to lose than to gain by letting *anyone* other than your significant other know you pack a pistol.
