I've got about 2000 rds of 7.62x51 NATO sitting around. I want a janky 308 cal enfield to toss in my trunk. Budget 200 dollars. Should I just buy an aimsurplus ishapore enfield 2A? Any better deals out there?

The 308's from India are OK, lacking in visual quality, you'll need some time to clean them up. Had two, sold two.

If you are willing to take some time and look around you will find Ishy Smellys everywhere.

When I bought my first one I was all in a tizzy about getting one and bought the first one I saw at a gun-show. I paid too much ($230, I think) and there is some slight intolerance in the mag, I think, that causing some jamming when chambering a new round, but I love the rifle and I think I fixed the problem.

The following spring I found a much nicer, cleaner specimen at the local old-man gun shop (The best kind of gun shop) for $150.

They told me that they tend to get more enfields of all types in right around deer season and it picks up until january and then they all sell out again.

Apparently its becuase of all those people who want the new whiz-bang deer rifle of the season, can't afford it, so they trade in whatever they don't care about in order to make up the difference.

They shoot all-right. I love the action and the concept. I'm sure someone will try to slap me over this, but I really want to make a Scout out of one of mine. I just need some time and money.

FWIW, I have read on the internet  that Ishy's have "weak ejection" and are not the most reliable bolt guns. That's certainly been my experience. I love my Ishy, but it does fail to eject about one time in 3. Also, its notch and post sights are not as good as aperture sights. Mine still shoots some fine groups, though.

It's accurate, rugged, inexpensive, and great fun to shoot. Should meet your need for a truck gun to dispose of your .308 ammo.

My Ishys have always ejected so strongly that I sometimes can't find the brass!

As far as sights go, I'd like to get maybe a ghost ring set-up.

I installed Mojo rear sight on mine. Very accurate when I get the hang of the crappy trigger. They are fairly attractive when you refinish them too.;)

My ishy always goes bang and always ejects. Shoots about 2 feet to the left at 50 yards, though. Maybe a good candidate for some blasphemous scout rifle conversion? :D

rbernie, did you have someone powdercoat the action on yours? Mine's nowhere near as black as that.

It's a matte bluing finish. The local gunsmith around here does a 'utility' bluing service; beadblast the material and blue it without polishing it. That looks like what was done here.

I've only shot two boxes of ammo thru my Ishy, but extraction and ejection was 100%.

My ishapore has worked well and ejects okay. I haven't been to the range with it but once, but it was decently accurate, but didn't compare to my K31.

Get a new extractor spring. Springfield Sporters possibly. Could happen to a .303 Enfield just as well.

Gibbs Rifle used to sell .308 SMLE Jungle Carbines, both refurbished and new.

No idea if they're still around, though. Their website's dead.
