I would say use part of that money and buy a safe, you can get a good one used for around $300 like I did. Then sit back and hang on as your world expands, enjoy the ride! Oh lest I forget some older used guns are better so dont be afraid to look in pawn shops and such!

$500 will buy you a decent 1911

New: You can buy just about any of the RIA's including the Tactical models for under $500. I have the Comp-Tac 45 and the 9mm Tactical. I bought the Comp-Tac for $325 in like new condition and my new Tactical 9mm was $430 plus shipping.

American Classic is also in the same ball park and their guns look a little nicer. The even have a hard chrome commander, if you can find one, for right around $500. Their regular commander is $430-$450.

ATI- Same deal here. Nice guns for under $500

Citadel-Made in the same factory as the RIA with a slightly better finish. Same price range same quality.

Their are others like High Standard that fill your bill.

Used: If you like a full sized gun with all the bells and whistles, look for a Taurus PT1911. They are $600 new so you should be able to get a good used one for $400-$500. I have Two and love them. Taurus even has a lightweight model.

You already like Glocks. Not a bad choice really. I think I own the only one that doesn't shoot well. I keep meaning to run it by Glock in Atlanta sometime I'm down there. I have been saying this for 10 years. Yes, I bought another Glock and it shoots great.

Since I really like revolvers, I would suggest you consider something like a 4" Ruger GP-100 as a good all around gun. 357 and 38spl are very easy to reload. You'll have a blast and you won't be scrounging around looking for your brass either. The Smith 686 is a great choice, but more expensive.

So it's not for "serious application?"

You need a massive handcannon! Duh!

I think every shooter needs one. Pick your poison, really. Like revolvers? .45 Colt+ or bust!
Like autoloaders? 10mm+ or bust. Get something with a satisfyingly large slide though, so you can hear it chunk back on every shot.

You know you want to. >.O

You handload, so why not choose something sweet like a Ruger Super Blackhawk in 44 mag? You can load em hot or you can load it to feel like a target 38 special. Tons of fun!

Why pocket pistol?

If your aim is punching paper or plinkin', what's wrong with 22LR? If more punch is needed, why not go with 9 mm, a longer sight radius, and longer barrel. Full sized (4.7 - 5.3" barrel) guns suit the bill better than mouse guns.

Definitely do NOT buy a revolver! While there are plenty of fantastic choices out there for $500 (a good used Dan Wesson 357 Mag comes to mind) you cannot possibly just buy one despite good intentions and an iron will. First you'll pick up a modest low mileage wheel gun like the DW. Then a couple of speed loaders, perhaps upgraded grips and sights. Then a companion piece (say a 6" barrel to compliment the 4"). One weekend you'll notice the S&W Mountain Guns and find yourself drawn to buying not one but three (45Colt, 41Mag, 44Mag). And no one owns one 41Mag; it's either none or a collection so now you're looking at 657 options, out-of-production Redhawks and collector's Dan Wessons. After a long night drinking you buy a Taurus, a mistake you vow to never repeat but somehow you come to like the Judge. And once you've tried the big bores there's no turning back....460 Rowland, 480 Ruger, 454 Casull, 460 Mag, 50 AE, 500 Mag. Soon you're tapping your credit line, maxing your credit cards and dipping into your girlfriends purse 'cause that Lew Horton is calling your name!

Oh, wait, that's me. I'm sure you'll be just fine!

I would take a look at a CZ 75, SP 01, or Rami. You can find those for around your price range and if you look for a used version you can get some extra mags too.

RIA 1911 wouldn't be too bad of a choice either. I think you get more firearm with the CZ line though. You can also find a really nice used S&W revolver for that. The reason I say used is so you can get a pre lock version. I paid a little less than $500 for a 19-3.

for around $500 you could go off the beaten path and get a kel-tec pmr30. who doesn't want a poly framed 30 round(flush fitting factory mag mind you) .22 magnum?? if i wasn't shopping for a new CCW piece, this would be my first choice for a "fun gun" to go paper punchin'/varmint killin'/neighbor scarin'/ can shooter. I say "neighbor scarin" b/c 30rds in rapid fire tends to raise a few brows - they hate it when i empty the 40rd mag on my sks, especially when bump firing. Never forget, guns are tools, but guns are fun too!!!:neener:

I have slimed the list down even farther. I still haven't decided between 9mm and 40S&W. I am leaning towards 9mm.

-CZ 75 B 9mm or 40S&w

-CZ 75 BD 9mm

-Sig P226 9mm or 40S&W

-Armscor 9mm 1911 Tactical (With the $50 of smith work from Ryan at Bill's in Robbinsdale

Of all my handguns I'd have to say the most versatile is my SP101 3".
It can handle a wide range of ammo from 38spl.,148grn wad cutters to full power 357mag. Great calibers for reloading! It can also do home defence or carry duty. If I could only keep one hand gun it would be a top contender.
If you were a little more definative with intended purpose I very well could have a different consideration!

Get an FNX9. This may be the best gun at the best price on the market. Made in the USA (SC). This gun is, IMHO, the heir apparent to the Browning High Power...which was also made by FN.
