My neighbor gave me a ruger single 6 .22 new model in mint codition. ran the serial at work, came up clean.

I am not really a fan of cowboy guns, I like them but I dont really shoot this one much. Should I sell it to get another gun I want, bersa thunder .380, or charter arms 22lr conversion for my g17, or keep it and save the money for the other stuff.

My friend gives me fruit from his garden and I think he's a great neighbor.
Yours gives you pistols with $400 to $500 MSRPs? WOW!!!!!!

The Ruger single 6 .22 is the PERFECT introductory firearm.
If you are ever in a position of teaching a newby, that is what you want to hand him (or her.)

If not, then yeah -- you might as well put the value in the gun towards something you will use.

And then one day, while hanging over the fence chatting with neighbor, he asks "how ya liking that gun I give you?", and you say "....................."

keeper

always good to have a plinker around. also as stated he may ask how it shoots... then what?

When you're 65 years old and it's time your grandkid learns how to shoot a pistol, what would you wish you still had? A Bersa Thunder that looks like it was put together and finished in a sweatshop, a Glock with conversion thats too big for a little kid's hands, or a neat cowboy gun with some sentimental value behind it?

I personally would keep it. There are few people in this world kind enough to give guns as gifts.
The Single Six is an example of good workmanship that you wont find in in similarly priced centerfire handguns.

I own two types of guns, permanents and temporaries.
My Ruger 10/22 is a permanant, it was my very first gun and was given to me by my girlfriend. My Sig 228 is a permanant, it was my first centerfire gun and I just love it so much. I have a GP-100 that I bought off a friend for a very good price, I will never sell it because I love shooting it and feel like I would be making money off his loss...you don't do that to friends.

Temporaries are things like my Mossberg 500, Taurus Tracker 970, and Tikka T3. I like them a lot may even shoot them more than some of the permanants. They are the more practical guns, bought for hunting. I wouldn't feel like I lost anything if I got rid of them.

When trying to decide on new purchases, the temporaries get considered in trades and sales to fund other purchases. There's nothing I would want bad enough to sell a permanant. I know if I just wait long enough I'll eventually be able to afford something without selling a permanant.

Everyone, of course, is different. It is easy for me to attach sentimental value to firearms. If you know for sure that you would enjoy something other than the Single Six and don't have any problems getting rid of it then go ahead and get something you like.

Yup, these guys are correct - keep it:

1) Always able to smile when asked how it shoots, since you still have the gift

2) .22 ammo is cheap - great for plinking

3) Ruger SA's are great, reliable guns

4) Save your other money for the 'other stuff', and never offend gift-giver

5) If you have kids or grandkids, it is a great training gun

6) Consider yourself very lucky to have such a great neighbor

OK after reading your posts, im going to keep it. Thanks for the input, I was swaying more toward the keep it side, and you guys brought up some great points which pushed me all the way. Thanks guys.

I don't know where I picked it up, but I don't sell off things of that nature that are gifts. I consider it "polite".

Even a really... uh.. "interesting" painting that was given to me as a christmas present by my best friend's ex is still in a closet at the old place... turned to the wall... all the way in the back...

Let it tag along every other range trip, it'll grow on you and you'll find yourself appreciating the lil gun. :)

My Single-Six is one of my really 'fun guns'. Plus, if I was going to teach kids or any new sdhooter, I can't think of a gun better suited to this task.
