The 8×50mmR French (8mm Lebel) rifle cartridge was the first smokeless gunpowder cartridge to be made and adopted by any country. It was introduced by France in 1886. Formed by necking down the 11mm Gras black powder cartridge, the smokeless 8 mm Lebel cartridge started a revolution in military rifle ammunition. Standard 8mm Lebel military ammunition was also the first to feature a spitzer boat tail bullet (Balle D) which was adopted in 1898.

I'm still waiting on some info from my uncle about the actual rifle that he had and what it was chambered for. I am real interested to see if it is in fact the Lebel or the Mauser.

It is correct. The 8mm Lebel was a quantum leap in terms of military rifle ballistics.

it is true but not all at the same time. it was the firsst round to use smokeless powder in 1884 but at that time it still used a flat nosed bullet much like most other military bullets at the time. by 1898 when the spitzer was adopted mauser, mannlicher, enfield, mosin nagant, and Krag were all building rifles intended for smokeless powder use. by the beginning of WWII almost everyone had switched to spitzers and by the mid 1920s the transition was complete across the board.

VZ-24

Be patient and get a nice sporterized VZ-24. The VZ-24s are some of the smoothest Mauser actions ever built. I found one with a 22 inch barrel and a 13 inch length pull and a Timney trigger for $400 plus tax at a pawn shop. Feels in the hands like a Remington Model 7. Probably be the last gun I ever sell.

Also +1 for Morsey2's recommendation of the Remington 700 IF you can find one at a decent price! I am really foggy on this but the one year of production was 2004?

By the way, some GREAT factory loadings have been coming out over the last 2 or so years. Check out Nosler loaded ammo for the 8mm especially. Also, the S&B 196 grain SPCE is supposed to be devastating on deer from what I hear, almost 2600 fps out the barrel. The more conservative Nosler is about 2475 FPS if I remember correctly.
