I went with the Lancaster Arms Tactical AK...built on with new Romanian G parts, Tapco Trigger, 1.6mm reciever, nice finish...stock photo:

+1 for the saiga. Pony up the big bucks for one converted or buy a sporter and do the work yourself. I've done 3 with only a Dremmel and a couple'a files

If you've got the moolah and don't mind an extra pound or so search for a milled Bulgarian. SLR-95, SAM-7 or SLR-101. Asking prices will start around $500 or so and only go up from there.

Watch out for the wasr, many like theirs but it's the bottom of the barrel. If I wanted a Romanian variant, I'd find a SAR-1.

Current Yugos will either have an original rusted out sewer pipe of a barrel or a new non-chorme lined US made barrel. If you can live with that they are a decent option.

Don't pass up a nice Norinco or Poly-Tech. Very nice and overbuilt, can be had for @$400-well over a grand for a true pre-ban Poly.

I've owned Chinese, Hungarian, Russian saiga and Arsenal Bulgaria. I kept the Bulgarian and had a little work done.

Another very happy wasr-10 gp owner here. Not 1 single issue in the 3 years I've owned it, with any ammo I toss in it.

Well if you want to spend a little extra money Arsenal Inc has the best AKs on the market... I love mine! It will cost you about $850 to $900 new, but if you can find a used one it will only be $600 or $700.

That being said, Vector has very good quality stamped rifles (make sure to request a chrome-lined barrel, I think it costs $20 extra). I think they are built on Polish parts but I'm not sure.

Yet another happy wasr owner here. The first thing i added to my rifle was a red dot and some bularian waffle mags. After shooting it the first time out it was clear a heat gaurd was in order and the stock was to short,so i added a set of Kvar furniture.I could not be happier with this rifle and it was more accurate than i had hoped. 10-19-07018.jpg

It was reconfigured by the armorers at Century to accept the standard mags.

HAHA...armorers at century...haha, oh man, thats funny.

Seriously though, i have a WASR-10, aside from a bit of mag wobble (due to century's butchering) its a great rifle, never had the first problem with it. Goes bang every time and its decently accurate.

Yugos are the best deal right now, particularly the underfolders. 1.6mm receiver, G2 trigger. All it needs is an Ultimak rail and a red dot.

I was hoping someone would appreciate that!:D

Seriously, I've been considering getting a WASR just to have an AK that I can abuse. I was going to have it NP3'd just to be an arse, but now classic arms has me covered:

Hard Chromed Yugo Underfolder, $519 at http://www.classicarms.us/ :

I am in the same boat... wanting to get an AK. Seems there are lots of ways to go. I don't think I want to go the Saiga sportster conversion route. I don't have the time on the platform to feel comfortable there. I definitely want to buy and be ready to play.

Seemed initially the WASR-10 were not thought of well, but some owners have certainly piped up to say otherwise.

Keep the info and intel coming. You guys are definitely going to influence more than one purchase. :)

Contrary to popular opinion, not all the Yugo kits that made it to the builders have "rusted out sewer pipe" barrels. I just sold two kits that looked as if they were not carried at all with absolutely beautiful bores.

Further, "sewer pipe barrels" usually clean up nicely and shoot fine.
