But I dont want to spend a lot of money.

So I'm thinking of getting either a WASR-2 or an M74 (the CAI built with a US-made barrel and a nodak-spud receiver).

The pros of each vs. the other

pros of the M74
-It's cheaper, 30$ cheaper, 60$ cheaper if you dont mind not having a side-rail to mount a scope
-It comes with a ak74 style muzzle break already attached

Pros of the WASR-2
-It has a chrome lined barrel.

That last one is what I'm really concerned about; How important is a chrome-lined barrel when shooting 5.45? I plan on shooting mostly silver bear, but I plan on also spraying and wiping it down with windex after every range trip before giving it a through cleaning with FP-10

anyway, yeah, how important is chrome-lining with proper maintainance?

if your going to clean it that often, I dont think you'll have to worry as much about chrome lining esspecially since you'll be shooting pricer non-corrosive 5.45.

if you wanna go cheap with quality, try the saiga in 5.45. it has a chromed lined barrel but it does have some drawbacks that make it undesirable to some(including crappy trigger, crappy sights, no pistol grip, and possible looks). these drawbacks werent enough for me to still want one though.

And you don't have to live with the crappy trigger of the stock Saiga. One guy converted his .223 back to pistol grip configuration (which includes replacing the trigger) for something like $80 by shopping around for the best prices on parts.

A BIG pro is "NOT BUILT BY MONKEYS FROM SUBSTANDARD PARTS". Why you are considering anything Century produces is beyond me

DING!DING!DING! We have a winnah!

I'm considering another century gun because I have a current-production WASR-10/63 and it is 100% reliable.

WASRs of yore (the ones directly imported from Romania) were pretty bad yes, but current production guns are pretty damn good.

AHA!

Century DOES NOT manufacture the WASR (not now and not in days of yore)

Century only IMPORTs and 922r-izes them.

They are still entirely made in Romania (only today, they're made from cut-up 7.62x39 AKs from the Romanian Army (which is why their quality is so much better - the parts have all passed military QC).

WASRs are still made of used parts, though.
