My current favorite.

For scope mounting, I like the Sadlak titanium. Shown here with TPS tactical rings

Springfield Armory Bush rifle with Ultimak mount, painted GI fiberglass stock, Burris 2-7x32 Handgun, and one of Andy Langlois' Ching Sling II's (picture taken prior to third sling point installation).

If you mount a scope like Wes Janson has, does this combo work well or is it less than desirable?

I don't care for how the Sadlak titanium/aluminium mount looks. It may very well be the best option though.

I like Wes' rig. That Ultimak is the best forward mount. I'm thinking a 1-4x pistol scope would be perfect for me.

Trying to figure out what the lowest. I plan to get a ARMS unless you know of something lower.
The Aimpoint low ring is probably the lowest. At least I havent found one lower yet. I use them on my AK's with the Aimpoints on an Ultimak rail. Its the only way they will cowitness.

I had ARMS Aimpoint lever mounts on my SOCOM. They are really made for the M16/AR15 flat tops and sit to high. I also had a lot of trouble with the mil spec mounts working on the Springfield rail. Mine was not mil spec. The Aimpoint ring is a Weaver type mount, so it probably would not be an issue. Its just not a lever mount.

Gun Tech, I have an Aimpoint High Ring for mine. There is a High Ring and an Extra High Ring.

With my CompC3 and Aimpoint High Ring, the bottom of my front lens cover actually rubs against the rail it is so low. I get a nice co-witness.

They're probably not the best quality but they're only $25.

Nice pictures.

I have shot a friend's Springfield Armory M1A National Match. A very nice rifle, but he doesn't attach a scope to it. The iron sights are really nice. I like them more than the M16/AR even though they're similar.

I noticed the Sadlak scope mount has a channel through it, so you can use the iron sights. How well does this channel work? Are irons still usable?

I would only put a 6x fixed power scope on it.

Hey Mr. Bond, how's that mount working for you?

It held pretty close to zero (about 2-3 moa) the first trip I reattached. I probably won't get to the rifle range for another month but I'll report back. I've high hopes, as I love the versatility of iron sights, fixed power scout and red dots all in one package.

oh no no no this thread isn't over yet,I still am going to show my pride and joys.

The pre-ban national match I got last May,it has a Winchester bolt and I not sure about the other componants though the barrel is marked .308.

The standard I just got recently,it has a low`serial number, winchester barrel and TRW bolt.Today is the first time I tried it,it shoots great but notice the one photo with target....it's shooting way off to the low corner of the paper.I have some situation to take care of and Im not sure if just adjusting the rear sight will take care of this.

Anyway besides shooting them, been photoing also.

Regarding the OP question about a possible ban:

- With McCain and Clinton as the current front runners I think a ban is pretty likely in the next 2-4 years (maybe 70%).

- However, I doubt they will try for and get a ban like California the first time out. I would expect a 10+ magazine ban and a re-do of the previous 1994 AWB which grandfathered in existing semi-autos.

- Only if they were able to get the AWB re-passed with a wide margin would they feel confident in trying to take away the grandfathering clause.

So I think a grandfathered ban including the AK, AR15 and 10+ mags is better than even possiblity in two years. Removal of the grandfather clause in 3-4 years is less than 50% but better than it has been in 10 years.

Your best bet is to now buy some USGI 20 round mags from www.44mag.com at $30 each. Get at least 10 ASAP. Then save for the M1A as quickly as possible. If you were able to set aside $100/mo, then you could buy the ten mags ($300) and save $1,700 for the M1A all within 20 months. That would be just within the early part of what I see as the risk zone.

My reasoning is that I don;t think a new president is going to risk skewering themselves on a gun ban their first year in office. So all of 2008 and 2009 are relatively safe from a ban. Last time the AWB was snuck in the fall, I think when most all of congress was at home for Thanksgiving, just after a raft of new conservatives were elected but had not yet taken office. If history repeats itself that would put November 2009 or 2010 as possible risk periods.

If you can save $100/mo starting in Feb. 2008 then you could have an M1A and 12 mags (ten + two that come with it) by Sept 2009.

Keep these pics posted on your wall to stay motivated. Another liberty tooth on the way!

If you don't think you can save all of that then you might consider getting an M1 Garand. You can find them at gun shows for about $900 and the 8-rd clips are about $1/ea. Then you could have it before the end of 2008 at $100/mo or Sept 2009 at $50/mo. The Garand is about one of the last rifles that will be banned and not grandfathered so it is low risk, but nearly equivalent to the M1A. I had originally planned to get an M1A but I decided I would rather have two M1 Garands than just one M1A. So now I focus my AWB jitters on building multiple AR15s and buying AR mags at $10-$13 ea.

For a good, all-around M14 style rifle, is the 18" barrel too much of a compromise over the std. 22"?

No, not at all!
IMHO, the 18.0" barrel is the ideal all-around general purpose barrel for the M14 platform.
The standard 18.0" Scout barrel from Springfield is excellent and the 18.0" medium heavy
Crazy Horse barrel from Smith Enterprise, Inc. is outstanding.
