So, I just got into rifles. I have a Romanian WASR-10 and I would also like an SKS to go with that. I have a three choices, either get a stock Century SKS, a Norinco SKS with all the bells and whistles, or try my luck at the WAC gun show in Puyallup, WA this weekend before the inauguration. I appreciate all the advice I can get!

Stock Century SKS $249.99

Norinco SKS $495.95

you can get a norinco sks alot cheaper than that, get a stock norinco. its less ugly than the yugoslavian one

The "century" model seems to be a Yugo 59/66. While $250 seems like a helluva lot, I payed $100 flat for mine about three years ago--and haven't regretted a penny of it. And, FWIW, I think the Yugo, complete with the "grenade launcher", "blade" bayonet, and ladder sight is pretty spiffy looking.

Why would you need all the extra crap hanging on the Norinco? Or rather, why do you want it? If you already have the WASR, what does it do that the beefed up Norinco doesn't, or what does the Norinco do that your WASR can't?

If you want an AK, buy an AK, not a messed-with SKS. If you want a good SKS, get a Yugo.

Or, take the same amount of cash as you would for the plasticky Norinco, and go buy the Yugo SKS, and then get some accessories for your WASR to trick it out--then you'll "have it both ways."

That Norinco looks like an aging hooker. You don't need all of that cheap crap on it. Do a search here and do some reading.

I don't like Yugos. They don't have a chrome lined barrel and chamber and they have that heavy monstrosity hanging out on the end.

So my advice is to go to the gun show and look for a Chinese or Russian in good shape.

I got a yugo m5966a1 in excellent condition from samco for about 300 and i looks new no scratches on the stock or wear on the metal. I feel like it has never been fired or maybe no more than a box or two. Check out samcoglobal.com

The Norinco or Russian are nice rifles. I would leave them stock or get two and trick one out. They shot great and you will be happy with them.

Yea, don't get the bubbaed Norinco, but try to find a good stock Russian or Chinese SKS. Yugo is a good SKS, but it definitely the heaviest of the SKS line. If weight isn't an issue, go for the Yugo.

Gun shows have been hit or miss of late (for obvious reasons), so don't bank on the gun show only. You might get disappointed. :(

the Yugo is not chrome lined. that said it really doesn't matter too much to me. If you are paying more that $300 the only one i would get is a Russian. I have a yugo and a Russian, and i feel the Russian is a better rifle. good luck

The SKS is ugly, not matter how much spend on it or what you do to it.

BUT, it is one of the best SHTF rifles out there. Cheap (you can buy one for each member of the family), adequately accurate (mine is 2 MOA with the stock open sights firing Chinese ammo), totally reliable (no FTfeed/fire/eject).

Ugly is in the eye of the beholder. Love my ugly plain Jane Norinco.

Yeah, don't get either. Stock Russian or Norinco. I had the Yugo, was perpetually trying to take off that grenade launcher crap, plus you can't get a reliable larger cap magazine for it.

Here's a nice looking Yugo. The granade launcher can be taken off. Yugo are great running SKSs. Also you can put lots of accessories on them.

MCgunner i'm no expert on the sks but i'd say you bought your rifles along time ago just a guess.....i remember sks's in a crate at gunshows for $75 each but that was 17 years ago!

Thanks for all your friendly advice gentlemen. I think I will try to find a Norinco SKS for around the same price as the Yugo, but if I can't, I'll just get the Yugo. I'll dress her up real nice myself with Tapco.

I had a Norinco SKS that used AK mags, it was a solid gun. I think the design is very simple and hard to mess up. Look for a nice bore etc.

I'd say 500 is high for the norinco. I bought one stock for 150 still full of cosmoline from a private party. I then added a tapco t-6 stock for 140ish. I own a yugo and it's great also but it is longer and heavier then the chinese. I got my yugo for 169 in the box from cabelas but they have gone up to between 250 and 300 from what i've seen. I think that you can find better prices unless your in a big rush. Also changing stocks is very simple to do, as is adding acessories. Get a stock rifle and change it the way YOU like. Imho the folding stocks are junk i've broken 2.
