I think that Classic Arms still has Yugo's for $195. They were still in stock earlier today.

Order one from Classic, go to the WAC show and buy one if it's reasonable, and if you end up with an extra you can always sell it pretty darn easy until Obamania subsides...

Big 5 has been selling (or at least advertising) Yugos for $395!

I just bought a Chinese SKS for $235 at my LGS. I jumped on that one but for some dumb reason I passed up a Russian SKS for $275 at the same place a couple of months ago.:banghead:

yes it does but you have to make sure you get the right bayonet cut for it. Spike or blade. If you go that route spend the extra $20 for the gas tube already fitted with the handguard. I split the wood on mine beating the pin out until I got some sense and just drilled it out.

Go for the Yugo. It's getting too hard to find anything else anymore. And you know you're just going to get screwed at the Puyallup show. Dealers price gouging everyone. It was bad enough before, but now it's just getting crazy there.

I think that if you prefer the SKS as it is in its natural state should go for the Yugo 59/66 at that price. If you want a lot of accessories I guess that one looks pretty equipped. It never hurts to look around at the gun show but $250 isn't bad for a SKS. I have experience with the Yugos and I like them very much. I kind of enjoy the idea of a grenade launcher even if I never use it. The two guns in question are really two different flavors. Which do you prefer?

Well... I might mess around with the SKS in its natural state for a little bit, but in the end I want her to look like this:

I don't shoot mine often, but I got them from Classic Arms. Great people to do business with. What I got was actually better than they told me they'd be. The $199.00 price isn't a lot more than I paid for mine a couple of years ago.

My local shop has "unissued" Yugo's for $449.00. I think mine look nicer than theirs. :D

I have a 20" Classic Norinco SKS with about 150 rounds through it so far. Great gun.... I just ordered the TS200 Tech Sight, and the fine .047 diamater front post. I also ordered the murray gunsmithing firing pin to prevent slam fires so I can leave it dirty more often. I'll probably be able to leave the gun uncleaned for a long ass time because of the short stroke gas piston, and by having the murray firing pin since it wont slam fire even if it gets dirty.:p

I'm going to have alot of sight radius when the tech sight arrives ;)

This baby was $150 a few weeks ago.

I plan on getting another SKS, the one I have now is souped up to look like an "evil blackie" I'm gonna get another and keep it bone stock....

Friends don't let friends Tapco-ize their SKS.

After having several and going all kinds of directions with them, I've come the conclusion it is a huge waste of money to "accessorize" the SKS. They are best when left stock. They're more reliable and more accurate that way. Dressing them up does nothing for them except make them more likeable to the mall ninja crowd.

I'd buy the Yugo if I were you, a ton of stripper clips, and a ton of ammo, and shoot shoot shoot. Trust me you will be happier that way in the long run.

That's why I'll be buying another one, so I can have best of both worlds there. And Lonestar.45 who buys an SKS for "accuracy" anyway? I have other rifles for that.......

I voted for the Century Yugo, but that was before I read that you were planning to chop it. Spare the Yugo and get a Chinese dumpster if you are going to do that do it.

You can probably bring your SKS back to stock after Tapcoing it. I am not sure of Yugos with all of the plastic, I would research that, but it seems like other models might be more what you would want. The tech sight is an awesome sight for replacing the cruddy stock sights. Good Luck and let us know how it all works out.

I'm certainly no expert but I have been in the SKS ether for 6 months.

During that time I've bought 8.

fwiw:

pay the price and get a low mileage Russian

re: "Can't you go back to the stock SKS after you have "Tapco-ized" your SKS?"

Yes, you can. It's only a matter of removing and reintalling the pesky handguard ferrule and its nefarious pin.

And, Lonestar, it doesn't have to be an "either/or" thang.

Can't you go back to the stock SKS after you have "Tapco-ized" your SKS?

Absolutely (as long as you aren't cutting off the grenade launcher or otherwise making permanent mods). And that's what most do after a while. But you won't get your money back out of the cheap Tapco accessories you bought.

And Lonestar.45 who buys an SKS for "accuracy" anyway? I have other rifles for that.......

My point exactly. Which is why I don't understand so many folks immediate desire to get a receiver scope mount and throw a cheap NcStar scope or red dot on it, which is usually what happens. Believe me, it won't improve accuracy much, if at all. I've done it and wished I'd had just spent the money on ammo and stripper clips instead.

I'll help you understand.

"Most folks" can see well enough to use the irons.

I can't.

I personally wouldn't buy a modded SKS. I like them original.

Go to the gunshow and look. If you get one before then, you'll go to the gun show and see a better one for less money.

SOG is selling small quanities of ROMANIAN SKS'. You might be able to buy one at the upcomming gun show.

I bought a Romanian when they first came in the country about 6-7yrs ago. Never regreted it. I kinda want to restore it but it shoots so good I don't want to risk messing with it right now when I have so many other projects. I also have a very nice Norinco I bought back when they were $69.00... anyway that was a while ago but it's a great little carbine as well. You should be able to get into an unmollested version of either for under $350.00 these days. For the kind of $$$ they are asking for that Norinco, I'd personally rather pony up for a nice Russian SKS (doc540, that 1955 Tula is a beauty).

I've never liked the Yugo's. With all that grenade crap hanging off the front of them... IMO they point like a heavy broom stick and if you remove it, there goes your C&R status. They are good quality built rifles but they don't compare to the others.

Classic is apparently running low on those SKS. That means the best condition ones are probably gone by now and even with hand select you'd be getting the best of the worst. My $.02

I got a Romanian about eight or nine years ago for $139. What a rifle! It's very accurate. Also wonderfully machined.

Mine, too, could use some restoration, as the lacquer finish is worn away from the stock in some spots and a lot of the bluing is gone. But it has character and, like you, I don't want to mess up such an accurate gun. I did replace the missing cleaning kit and cleaning rod.

I rate the Romanians as best of all the SKS rifles. My Yugo is in better external condition, but the internals of the Romanian surpass it.
