What's so great about a USP?.....the same thing that's so great about all HIGH QUALITY handguns that are consistantly reliable year after year......that fit YOUR HAND properly and are within YOUR price range.
How can anyone challenge that?.....When someone I trust tells me that a particular handgun performed for them reliably over a long period of time I become interested....I check the ergonomics,the variety of calibers and make a choice on whether or not it's for ME.....simple.
I can't stand berretas they don't feel right in my hand(exept for the mouseguns) but I would never challenge anyone on their chosing of a berreta for their favorite gun....berreta has proved to the consumers that they make fine handguns.
I supose the above thead was closed for good reason...My guess is that Tropical Z was just messin around......I wonder where he would draw the line as far as high quality......how about you?

ok, i'll bite. why i think the USP is "all that and a bag of chips." by Bobby

i like cool stuff. i like things that give you the feeling that somebody really put some thought into the design and engineering of it. stuff that makes sense. and stuff that is very high quality. i like stuff that puts function over form, quality over affordablilty, and realiability over asthetic appeal. and most of all, i like things that work the way they are supposed to work EVERY time. out of all the guns i tried before i bought one, the USP compact met all those criteria.

i wanted a .40 with at least 10+1 capacity, didn't care if it was polymer or metal, i wanted an exteral safety and a decocker. the polygonal bore was a big plus for me. the magazine release is vurtually impossible to accidentally actuate and quite convenient once you get over the paradigm thet you have to use your thumb. the ability to change modes of operation is also attractive but not necessary for me at least. magazines with or without finger rests, night sights, UTL and other accesories are just icing on the cake for me.

yes the USP has shortcomings, but so does every other design.
the bore axis is not a mile above your grip as some would have you believe. its higher than a glock, but the USP has a hammer and the hammer needs space. try to get hard primer to fire in a Glock by pulling the trigger again. the trigger is not a "breaks like glass 2.5# super polished ultra tuned" trigger. and those that complain about that fact are missing the point. its not meant to be a target pistol. thats what the match and expert and such are for. its a Universal SERVICE Pistol. its not a Universal IDPA Match Shooting Pistol. (UIDPAMSP?)

some complain that its not as fast their their race gun. DUH! could it be the shooter is not as fast? no way! has to be the gun! you will be fastest with whatever you shoot the most, more than likely. so if you shoot 1911's, then switch to a USP and expect to be as fast, you'll be disappointed. if that same shooter started out with a USP, became profient with, then switched to a 1911, it will take work to get as fast again with the new gun. my compact is my only pistol for a reason. i want to be really good with one gun. not medicore with a bunch of different guns. and i don't have the time or resources to to get really good with a lot of guns. so i need one gun that does it all. again, the USP fits the bill

the USP doesn't do any one thing spectacularly. it does a bunch of things really good. and thats what it is designed to do. yes the 1911 is a good design too, but its almost 100 years old and i don't want that whale tail sticking out the back of my gun so it doesn't bite me when i shoot it. even some of the 1911 guys will admit that a good lot of 1911's need some tweaking to be really reliable and accurate. i have a bad taste in my mouth from Sig's. the only P229 (my second choice) i tried was a like Jam Master J. i had the in house gunsmith check it out and he said it was just dirty. i don't want a gun that won't fire if its dirty. Glock has put a lot of thought into their pistols, but for me anyway, they just don't "fit". but at least Glocks just plain work.

USP's are expensive, ugly, overengineered, fat, have rough grips, and heavy DA triggers, but, its tough as nails, goes BANG every time, won't slip out of a sweaty hand, and will survive just about anything you put it through and still function. it was designed with combat in mind. not beauty contests, slick triggers, 50 yard bullseye shooting etc. its the only gun i can think of that was designed, engineered and TESTED around +P and +P+ ammo. 30,000 rounds worth of +P+ before a single part needs to be replaced. thats pretty impressive.

thats my story and i'm stickin' to it.

Love my .45 USPc. It'll be my home defense gun. Not quite as accurate as my Kimber, but only by a small margin. Can't find a thing wrong with it except that it is a bit large for carry. And using it for HD, who cares?

you can buy an HK USP for $399? hell i paid $829 for my HK USP 45 NIB. for a gun that cost $399 and it's from HK, i'd pick it up without any hesitancy.
also, i notice that problems with the USP is usually originate from user error, not hardware error per se.
