I was given a S&W Model 19 aka "Combat magnum" by my dad. Some history about this gun. It is the first "real" handgun that I started off with (of course not counting a browning buckmark which he gave me for the girls to have). Dad would have me shoot .38 specials in it, and eventually when I was ready he introduced me to .357 magnum with this pistol. I have always wanted a model 19, and have looked every where for one, and have never been able to find one, that was as good looking or that meant as much to me as the one that my dad had. So after many years of waiting and wanting, he gave it to me. I am so ecstatic it is not even funny. Most of you know that I am a semi auto kinda guy. honestly the model 19 is the only wheel gun that I would want. In my opinion the model 19 is the best wheel gun ever made.

More history one this gun. It has a red ramp front sight and a white outline rear. It has had a trigger job done on it, many many years ago. It has a smooth da trigger pull, and a scary awesome single action trigger. As you will notice from the pictures the S&W logo is on the opposite side as normal as this gun dates back to the 70's and I am the second owner. It also has a pinned barrel.

I cant wait to take it to the range and shoot the crap out of it again like I use too so many years ago. It has been at least 12 or so years since I have shot it.

Check out the pics. It is a beauty.

Give yer dad a hug!

While I certainly agree on how nice a gun any 19 is this one obviously shoots that little bit straighter, looks a little bit shinier and fits that little bit better in your hands. But then that is because of the source.... :D

They don't get much better than a Model 19. Go build some more memories.

I saw your thread title, and three possibilities came into my head:
1: S&W model 27
2: Colt Python
3: S&W model 19

Seems I was right. Great revolver, and that one is in great shape. Get those horrible grips off it and get it some nice leather, and you are good to go!

You received a hand held memory maker from your Pops, that's a nice one and I can tell it's a special to you. I bet it shoots even better than you remember....:)

Nice. Need to lose the rubbers and get some wood. But I do not believe having the logo on the side plate (right side) is unusual for S&Ws of this era. All of the guns pictured below are K frames made 1969-79 and all have the logo on the side plate.

Nice gun! I have my Father in Law's model 19 that he bought in the 50's. It is like new in the box and like yours has lot's of memories. Ours has the 4" barrel. This m-19 will go to my son, and hopefully to his, and so on.

Model 19, my first handgun and still my favorite shooter. Make sure you pass it down to your father's grandson or granddaughter.

I agree. Ditch the Goodyears and get some nice wood on that thing. K-frames are my favorite S&W models.

Thanks everyone! This is indeed extra special to me. Also thinks for the multiple pictures posted to the thread. Hope to hit the range this coming weekend to see how I can do with it.

Fantastic revolver, plus the personal history adds a lot to it for you I'm sure. My first was a Colt Tropper MK III, also a gift from my father, and still my favorite in my collection. very nice, thanks for sharing.

I'm not a fan of the grips either. But if this is the way he and his dad shot it all those years ago and assuming the grips still fit him then I don't see them switching to wood any time soon. And that would only be right. Some things are not meant to be changed.

That's the great thing about grips. One screw and you can switch them back and forth. Put the Pachmyers on for shooting and put some nice wood grips on for showing off. I have a whole box full of assorted grips. Black on black has never been appealing to my eye. But keep the Pachmyers and you can always put them back on for sentimental reasons.

Aw heck... Just keep it the same as when he gave it to you. It could have been rusty, loose and worn out and you'd still love it. It's the generous gift with a history that means so much. Do yourself a favor and write down the date he gave it to you, the circumstances and how you felt. When you pass it on, hopefully you'll still have that note to go with it.

Howdy

Congratulations, nice gun. I agree, the Model 19 is one of the best revolvers ever made. The S&W logo on the side plate is typical of Smiths from that era. That's where it is on my 19-3 that I brought brand, spanky new in 1975, the first centerfire revolver I ever bought.

1) Colt "Python"
2) S&W Model 19.
3) S&W Model 29.
(HARD really to say which order really.)
We do not have a S&W model 19 in our family anymore, my father had one for years and I remember shooting it several times when I was a kid (first magnum I ever shot) he sold it years ago and he has regretted it ever since.:)

I owned two different M19's in my younger days, both were identical 6" models with the orange ramp front and white outlined rear sights, and I'd have to agree....those were damn fine guns! Certainly the best revolvers I've ever owned. I still miss them. Gonna go cry now.....

No argument from me about the 19 being the best; it's a K-frame and that's good enough.

But even better, it was your dad's, and it was from your youth. Frankly, with that pedigree, it could have been anything; you're just lucky that your dad has extremely good taste.

Shoot it, cherish it.

And welcome to the dark side, wheelslinger....

:D

Get hold of Ahrends and get some wood on that thing! A gorgeous gun deserves some gorgeous wood.

By the way, your Dad is one helluva guy!! Congrats to both of you!

Nice. Make sure you put the history (write it up) with the gun in the box for posterity sake. As it move through the years....

I just bought one NIB and all I know is that the guy who owned it before me purchased in Indiana, and never fired it.
