I went in the store looking for scope mounts.

IMG_20181228_205513.jpg I was killing time and went into a pawn shop.
This 7x57 Spanish Mauser had a $237 price tag on it. I haven't seen one in almost 20 years so I walked out with it.
The bore is excellent. The stock was butchered by someone and the safety is stuck on fire.
When I get back home I will strip the bolt and see what's up.

7mm is a great round

Rifle looks like it is complete except for the stock
being cut down

Good buy

I have killed the biggest part of my total deer kill with a 7x57 rifle. A Mauser that was sporterized by my grandfather way back in the late 1950s with a custom stock and a P.O.Ackly barrel. And a couple of years ago I bought a Remington Mountain Rifle in 7x57 that has had Remington factory sights added to it. I won't hardly buy a rifle that doesn't have open sights on the barrel. And its a shooter too. I really like that round.

I think you did good on your find. And I like the chopped stock. I had an old 8x57 24/48 Zastava and it was a neat rifle but good lord what a boat anchor it was.

7x57 is a pretty decent round. I have a box of 175 rn and 175 sp. I'm going to see what it thinks of them and a case full of h1000.
I may bed and free float the stock since it's cut down. I want to get an original replacement though.

you do understand that this is a small ring action, and over a hundred years old?
it also lacks the third safety lug of a model 98, and doesn't deal to well with escaping gas in event of a case failure - go easy on the handloads

Yes I do. H1000 produced the least pressure for velocity of the load data I have found. It is slow enough that it hits compressed loads before max pressure.

This rifle is throated even longer than the last 7mm I dealt with. 175 RN falls out of the case before touching.
At 50 yards, factory 139sst were ~5" groups. 175RN from another rifle were 3". IMR4064 and 154 sst were under an inch for 6 shots.
The 154s surprised me. With the super long throat, I started 1 grain under max and loaded 6. I am definately going to do a real work up with these bullets.

I liked at the serial numbers on this thing. The floor plate and mag match. The action and bolt match. The 2 part stock matches.
Pretty much a total piece mill. Everything fits well though.

I remember picking one out of a carboard drum at the Big Bear store in Billings Mt back in 1972 for $74.95. I shoot 6mm Rem and .257 Roberts which are derived from the 7x57 cartridge.

6mm is a sweet cartridge. My brother has a Mauser sporting rifle in that. It is perfect for deer.
