... and I needed to open a P.O. box. They need to see ID of course - a drivers license and something else - not a credit card or a SS card. Well, we all know that carrying a gun in the post office is illegal and so I had dutifully left my gun in the truck.

Well, I had two other options for ID and one was my CCW permit. At first I thought that it was a bad idea but then I decided to use it just to see what would happen - it being the post office and all.

Well, I was pleasantly surprised. When the lady saw what I had handed her, she said, "I always wanted to get one of those." She then told me about the time that she was being followed and would have died if the guys at the local gas station had not helped her. Of course, i was then obliged to recommend a local place where she could get it and we had a pleasant chat about the whole thing.

The more I carry, the more comfortable I get. And the more comfortable I get, other people seem to be more comfortable with me carrying as well.

I use mine also for things like that, not at the local supermarket, but in FL, if you renew your drivers license on the internet, they never get a new photo, they just mail you this sticky thing to put on the back of the existing license. So the picture is at least 10 years old, very smart right? I am waiting for someone to say, that's not you.

Small stands like this, one conversation at a time.
Don't hide the latest G&A issue under the national geographic in your shopping cart, put it on top of the eggs, where everyone can see what you're buying.
The oddball remarks you may attract are perfectly good opportunities to "witness"

Unless OK has a law prohibiting it, no, we don't all know it is illegal.

it's federal, and no - (d)(3) does not mean you can carry with a CWP, despite it appearing as such.

Fly320s - I'll admit I don't know the answer to that. I'd imagine it's come up, but I haven't researched that aspect of it. I just know that what I've read has advised not to interpret it as such and tempt fate.

Of course, 39 USC 410 discounts all sections of federal law relating to federal buildings and employees when dealing with the postal service. On the other hand, 39 CFR 232, which clearly states:
"(l) Weapons and explosives. No person while on postal property may carry firearms, other dangerous or deadly weapons, or explosives, either openly or concealed, or store the same on postal property, except for official purposes."

There's a much better discussion of this over here:

I haven't heard of this being tested in court (but to be honest, I'm lazy and haven't really looked.) That being said, I certainly don't want to be the test case.

I've used my CCW as ID - in a bank while carrying. The woman had no reaction at all.

More importantly, we here in Pahrump can definitely carry in the PO. Why? Because we have some guys here who've pushed OC to the point that the DA allows it in the PO, Library and concealed carry only in the DMV. The PO and Library are OC or concealed.

With all the OC and CC in Pahrump, how many murders, armed robberies, etc. have you experienced the last few years?

Could Pahrump be the next exhibit for the "More Guns, Less Crime" argument?

Due to the exemptions, at best you can argue the legally is questionable. I consider self-defense an official purpose. It does not say sworn LEO. Until a court case comes down and screws us, I carry in post offices, since the local ones are not posted.

I used my CCW as a second form of ID once and the person said they needed a third piece because the state-issued CCW with picture wasn't a valid ID. I never did get an answer as to why they thought that.

They accepted my Social Security card which has no picture confusing me even more.

Same here, I tried using my CWP as ID once for a Home Depot promotional thing and they wouldn't take it. I'd forgotten my wallet but fortunately had my CWP, but they still wouldn't take it and gave me the same argument, that somehow the Florida CWP with photo wasn't an "official" id. Okaaaay.

I think it's a good thing to "witness", but I've gotten a little more concerned about keeping the CCW thing low profilish, so I don't take the opportunity to "witness" as much as I could.

a few months ago I opened a P.O. Box in Indiana with drivers license and carry permit as I.D.
routine transaction, with no comments.

bingo, this is the key right here, the more comfortable and confident you are with yourself, the more comfortable and confident you will be with others.

kudos friend, I'll never forget the first time I used my Zombie Squad ID as a picture ID, the look on the person's face was classic.

Although I can't carry in NYC I do possess 6 carry permits from various states as well as a NYC Rifle & Shotgun Permit. Most people in NYC are so oblivious to the gun laws here as soon as they see a NYC permit / license it's like "wow how did you get this" & they automatically presume you're an ex LEO or some high level security person.

I don't think most New Yorkers are as anti as they are portrayed this is a very "Hollywood" if I had a firearm I would blow a BG's brains out city. Most just think that they don't qualify for any form of firearm permit here & those that do qualify in their minds are worthy of some respect, lol.

SDG: Well said.
My local POs' have signs posted.
I also can't understand why the most official piece of ID I carry is not official enough?
Cheers, TF

you can also use a hunting lic of fishing lic as when you sign them you are under penalty of purgery.

I don't know the stats but guns are very popular and out here it's unknown how long a call to 911 would take to get response so we realize we have to take care of things ourselves. :)

I went so far and confirmed with the clerk once, that I could indeed bring in already boxed-up long guns that I was shipping, since the building was posted.

I could.

JOsh

I used my CHP when getting my marriage license. The state only had CCW for less than 5 months at the time. The clerk was a little surprised.
