So I was with my friend the other day at Wally World buying a video. I get to the checkout area and pay with my credit card. The checker asked to see my ID so I gave her my driver's license. She said that she couldn't read it because the sticker had worn off (and it did), so I gave her my CCW permit. She said that it was not considered a valid form of ID! :what: So two things occured to me at that point. Why isn't Wally World accepting a piece of ID that is harder to obtain than an Oregon driver's license (anyone with a piece of mail can get one), or are they turning anti on the CCW people? Either way I was pissed and utterly confused. :cuss:

They are probably instructed by the corporate office what forms of ID are valid. I don't think all stated make their CCW's photo IDs, and they aren't available in all states, so it may be impractical for them to instruct cashiers to accept them as IDs. Plus, they aren't exactly common.

I have had the same situation occur using my military ID, which does have my photo and signature. I pointed out that if a US Government ID card was not considered valid ID, then I could not imagine what would be considered valid ID.

The cashier very well could be wrong in fact but correct as far as policy goes. They might just tell them a flat rule to prevent the LCD from accepting a Blockbuster card.

I'd have talked (politely) to a manager if it was going to be a big inconvenience.

Hey, if they don't want your money spend it somewhere else. Life's too short to hassle with idiots.

Military IDs are not considered valid on the outside because they have no address on them. That was the reason given to me when I was a cashier for Costco.I accepted them anyway.

Many years ago I tried to cash a check. The store was nearby the apartment so I left with only the check and my police badge/ID card. Showed it to the clerk and she literally laughed and said, "that's not ID". I left empty handed. A drivers license for ID has been common practice for decades. This country will never wake up.

It's too bad that some places will not accept a military ID card as identification. The military accepts it! You can go just about anywhre in the free world with it when on active duty. Around Ft. Lewis, WA, military ID is accepted as ID along with a driver's license for stores wanting two pieces of ID for check-cashing or alone for proof of age.

I looked at my WA CHL and while it has my physical description and even my WA driver's license number and my signature, I don't think it would be accepted as ID if it was the only card you had. Most places want some form of picture ID.

When I worked for the state, I could use my security badge for check-cashing and it really had nothing on the card except my picture and a number that was unique to our office and had no connection to a database like a drivers license number. Go figure.

Some people simply don't think before making the rules.

I remember back a few years ago, I was buying model rocket engines. It seems that they took the 'Ages 14 and up' sticker as a rule, not a reccomendation. Well, they wanted proof that I was 14. Now, I don't know how a 14 yr old goes about proving he is 14, but they wanted photo ID with the DOB right on it. Eventually a manager got over there, and logic prevailed.

I tried using my CCW to get into a bar once because I forgot my license at the range earlier that night. They said they couldn't accept it because they couldn't compare it to their book of examples that they keep. So I had to go home and get my passport.

AZ accepts CCW permits as a form of ID, even though we don't have a photo on it. I have used my Dept ID as a second form of ID, and never had an issue. Hmmm.

I know of one case where a legally-blind person having dinner in an upscale restaurant was denied a drink because for identification (to show he was over 21) he used the "State ID" that's issued to persons who don't want or don't qualify for a driver's license.

He sued.

It's my understanding that the settlement would keep him fed and liquored up at that restaurant for a long, LONG time. ;)

I've had both CHL and a U.S. passport refused as ID at the same place where they wanted "2 forms of ID". This was cashing a check at a grocery store here in Houston. The kid stared at the CHL and the passport like there was a picture of a Martian on them but refused to call the manager. I simply walked out of there and never went back.

Never tried using my NC CCL for ID, but it probably wouldn't fly because there's no photo on it.

No disrespect intended to the original poster ... but why do people seem to get all wrapped around the axle every time they encounter minimum-wage discount store clerks who display a lack of common sense and/or examples of corporate stupidity?

I'm not sure what everyone's expectations of stores such as Wal-Mart are ... but why would a situation such as a CCW permit/CHL/CPL not being accepted as a form of ID be noteworthy? These licenses/permits are not issued to be used for identification purposes.

Let's move on, folks, and quit analyzing every silly Wal-Mart experience we suffer...

It just depends on the state. For example, a Texas CHL is not considered a valid ID, though some legislators are trying to pass bills that would change that.

The problem the Wally World cashiers have is they couldn't tell the difference between a real police ID, for example, and a completely fake one because they wouldn't know what one looks like.

Taurus,
I'd chaulk this one up to:
1) a poorly trained cashier
2) as others pointed out, consistant policy from the corporate office
3) a cashier who couldn't think on their own

I've had my valid US Passport refused as proper ID before. The manager came over and straightened it out.

Silly and ridiculous.

Old Dog, the reason why people gripe about people being morons at a minimal paying job is that we expect the people to at least be competant for their pay. Too often the cashier can't even make change. Blindly accepting this promotes the problem. You do have a point though. The expectations of service should be lower for a store like Wal Mart than a specialty store. Afterall, the price you pay at the specialty store is for customer service.

Taurus, I hope that you said something to the manager.

Your not going to believe this but in Tulsa Okla, where I was raised, the CCW permit is not acceptable form of I.D. in most places. Its way above the corporate mentality especially when applying for work. Yes you heard me right. Seems they prefer the faceless Social Security Card or OKla Drivers Permit. Go figure.

ID Problems

I was asked to show two forms of photo ID to get a refund from a store. My second form of photo ID was a Library of Congress Reader's Card. The clerk couldn't understand the significance of an LCRC and thought I was trying to prove I could read. She informed me that she could read too!

My wife, who is a teller manager at a Bank of America, just informed me that they cannot accept a CHL as a primary for of ID. They can, however, accept it as a secondary form of ID.

They have a list of items that can qualify as primary ID.

1. State issued ID card or DL
2. Passport
3. Military ID
4. Alien Registration card
5. Mexican or Canadian DL.
6. DL from US territories

She says there may be a few more minor ones that she can't think of off the top of her head.
