This going to be a thread for those who are looking for a date of manufacture for their S&W revolvers.

We'd need to know :

a) caliber
b) bbl length (from cylinder to muzzle)
c) grips shape (round or square)
d) number of shots/cylinder bores
e) type of sights.
f) serial number, and if there is a letter in front of or anywhere near the s/n on the bottom of the grip
g) Model number if it is under the crane.
That number, if it is the s/n, should come from the butt of the grip (or under the barrel or face of the cylinder).

A picture or two is worth A LOT of words in this case...

if it is a md 10 it is not marked anywhere, not marked M&P anywhere....I am thinking it may have been a military and police that has been modified regular k frame grips will not fit it.

Please tell me more about this S&W.

Model of 1905, Military and Police. What would later become known as the Model 10. Yours is pre-WW2, but nailing those down to an exact date is tough.

.38 Special Model 36
5 Shot
Square Butt
1 7/8' barrel
Serial #J127044

Supposedly only 5 rounds had been through it, but it looks like more or it had fired and never cleaned. From what I can glean, it might have been manufactured in 1969 or 1970, would love to know for sure. Definitely a very tight, clean gun with a smooth DA trigger. My first all steel J frame.

I need some help with a gun of my 83 year old father. Mom says she bought it for their 25th anniversary which would have been 1980, but in doing some internet searches I think the 29-3 didn't go into production until '82-'83. But I have NOOOOO idea.

It is in a case and has never been fired (unless by S&W)

a) .44 magnum blued
b) 8 3/8" barrel
f) AYC18XX
g) 29-3

It has another 5 digit number by the front when you open it to load it. 3xxxx
And also a large G5 above that number. bad stamping on the "G"

Looking for any info...when made, value, etc. And any help will be GREATLY appreciated.

My wife was left this gun and was wondering it's age. Thank you for your help. 1-S&W Airweight 38 Spl. Left copy.jpg 2-S&W Airweight 38 Spl. Serial copy.jpg 3-S&W Airweight 38 Spl. Right copy.jpg
the details are as follows:
a.) .38 spl
b.) 1 7/8" pinned bbl.
c.) Square grips
d.) 5 Shot Cyl.
e.) Fixed sights
f.) 331248
g.) model 38

Model 60-7 was made in 1990; change was an increase in sight width to 1/8"
Normal price range would be about $275 to $500 depending on condition; however, in the current market and depending on where you are, prices might be vary greatly from that

Thanks very much for the info.

The 10-8 started in 1977 and was replaced with the 10-9 in 1988. It looks like your serial number range was from 1979
