Inherited this revolver from my father in law after he passed.
It has seen better days, missing a lot of finish on the right hand side.
Someone replaced the grips with square butt at some point, big gap in between the frame and grip at the bottom.

No actual markings on the frame aside from the caliber and serial number.
FFL that did the transfer marked it down as a Military and Police.
Any info greatly appreciated!

a) .38 special
b) 5" barrel
c) round butt, but a set of square grips are installed.
d) 6 shot
e) fixed sights

Well, it is a Military and Police, .38 Hand Ejector, model of 1899. I will guess that it was made in 1900, they were up to 20000 in 1902.
Aftermarket nickel plated, S&W does not plate the hammer and trigger.

Note that it lacks the front latch on the tip of the extractor rod, that is what was added in the model of 1902.

Thank you!

Interesting re: the refinish. This piece obviously has a history to it. There was also a number on the inside of one of grips. 770684

Hello all,

Wondering about the age of my stainless 60-0.

a) .38 spl
b) 1.875" barrel
c) round butt
d) 5-shot
e) ramp-and-gutter sights
f) serial no. R1912XX
g) model 60-0

Thanks!

I'm not seeing the prefix ABB in my books. I know the 686 no dash was only made from 1980 to 1985. If I had to guess I would say it's a 1982 or 1983 but that's just a guess from the other prefixes around it. It's possible your gun is part of a special run, email S&W and they can tell you. Years ago I bought a M640 and couldn't find they year of shipping. S&W told me it was part of a special run in 1976.

Sorry I can't tell you for sure.

Emailed S&W they said 1982

Can you get close to the date on a K22, serial number 669635? It is an Outdoorsman or First Model, 6" barrel, adjustable sights, original (not magna) diamond grips. The Standard Catalog puts the serial number between 1931 and 1940, hoping to get a definite year. Thanks.

I think but I might be wrong your M18-3 is from the first year of the -3 series, 1967.

Thanks AA

I ended up buying the Standard Catalog.

1967 serial numbers start with k715997

serial numbers starting 1K are 70 & 71. Mine appears to be 1971.

I don't know anything about this S&W revolver.

The V serial number makes it what collectors call a Victory Model, made as a secondary standard in World War II after serial numbers reached 1000000. It has been nickel plated after being sold surplus and given plastic "stag" grips.
I can't read a caliber marking on the barrel but the 5" barrel means it is most likely a British Service Revolver (BSR) originally in .38 S&W, although many sold surplus in the USA were reamed out to sort of accept .38 Special.
The FTR might mean Full Through Repair meaning it was refurbished in England. The 52 is probably a rack number or issue number.

After scrolling through30 pages of this thread I've come to some conclusions: there weren't many folks asking about ten dash sixes and there didn't appear to be many folks with serial numbers starting with "C"

From what I could deduce from that amount of scrolling...... DOB about 1965. Same as me!

How'd I do?

Unfortunately the most current SCSW book, the 4th Edition lists all the V models in a block.
The books listing is like this:
1942 - 1945 V1 - V811119
Your serial number is V 4438xx so if the numbers are linear which they usually ars not I would guess your revolver dates to late 1943 or early 1944. That's just a guess but in any case you know for sure it's within those 4 years.
Jim Watson also gave you good info. Did you try writing S&W and ask them for a date?

Sorry I couldn't be exact on the year.
