Identity and Date of Manufacture of S&W Revolvers

bz4736: Your 629-1 was probably made between July 1985 & November 1985. Serial number prefixes for those months were AHT & ALA respectively. Some guns were made out of date order however, so this cannot be guaranteed, but it's probably correct. To be certain you would need to pay $50 fee to the S&W historian Roy Jinks to have him research your individual gun.

Your model 31-1 falls into the serial number range for 1961-1969, being 712954 to 826977. The -1 denotes a change from the I frame to the J frame.
If it has a flat cylinder latch it it is from 1961 to 1966, if it has an un-checkered diamond around the grip screws then it from 1968 or earlier.

Your model 36 falls in the serial number range between 1962 & 1969. Grip & latch changes are the same for the model 31-1 which may help narrow it down further.

Your model 10-6 falls in the serial number range for 1972-1973, being D420001 to D510000.

dob help

i have two that i would like some info on

1- s&w model 66 4" stainles ssn# auw 8457 357 mag

2- s&w mod 29-2 4 " barrell,blue, 44 mag, sn#chm0828

mykeal: The 60-15 (.357 magnum three inch target) was introduced in 2001. The serial number ranges in the Standard Catalog of S&W cut off at October 2004, the range prefix then was CTA, so your gun was made after that.
 
bill boucher: Your model 66-3 was probably made in the first half of 1987, serial prefix AHC is recorded in January 1986 & AVB in July 1987.

Your model 29 was probably made in Jun or July 2004, the CHM prefix was recorded in both those months. The only problem with that is that the 29-2 was discontinued in 1982 and should have a serial number with an N prefix and 6 numerals. So either the number you have quoted is not the serial number, or the gun is a 29-9. The serial number is always on the bottom of the grip, you may need to remove the grips to see it.
 
wrong sn# given

you are right- the number under the grips were completely different on my s&w 29-2. the correct sn# is n149475- what would the dob be now? thanks in advance bill
 
What year is mine? The serial # is 359J7. Its a 5 shot, snub nose .38 special. I think my Dad bought it around 1974 but I don't know if it was new or used at that time. Thanks for your help.

f0s/n is covered by the grip and its not my gun, so i cant take the grips off, im just doing research for the owner.
 
If there is no model number stamped under the crane (visible when the cylinder is open) then it is from 1957 or earlier.
I can't tell you more than that without the serial number & or the model number.

Bill Boucher: Serial number 331708 makes it a S&W .38 Military & Police Model of 1905 4th Change, made in the serial number range 241704 to 700000 between 1915 & 1942.

from discussion on this forum & The Firing Line I'm pretty sure that gun may date to WWI or just after it and the cylinder may not be heat treated, so it should only be shot with standard pressure ammo. I suggest you start a new thread to get an answer on that.

The I frame .32 is a .32 Hand Ejector Model of 1903 and was made between 1903 & 1904 in the serial number range 1 19425. If it has target sights it may have considerable value to a collector .

Jim Bob - sounds like you have a .22 Ladysmith, but the numbers don't match. Those are the s/n's on the bottom of the grip frame (or look under the barrel above the ejector). Can you post a picture? That would help a lot.

soonerboomer - probably 2005, maybe 2006? The book and other sources don't have that recent information yet. They were up to CHXxxxx in 2004.
