Have a 29-3 here that I got to fondle for a little. Can you tell me how old she is ? This combination of options does not appear typical to me for some reason. ser # ALB383x, RR front sight, white outline rear, round butt, finger groove grips. Non pinned barrel, non rebated cylinder, smooth trigger, wide target hammer, 3 screw sideplate, heavy lug 3 " barrel, blued finish.

ALB383x dates your 29-3 to around November 1985. I think you have a Lew Horton Special. Lew Horton was a distributor who ordered special runs of guns from S&W. The M29-3 Combat Magnum came with contoured wood grips, 3 inch barrel, red ramp front sight, adjustable white outline rear sight, smooth combat trigger and semi target hammer. 5000 were manufactured in 1984-1985. Product code was 101224. In 2006 the Standard Catalog of S&W gave a value of $700 for as new in box.

You have a .38 Military & Police Model of 1905 4th Change manufactured between 1920 & 1927. It lacks the modern hammer block safety, so it would be prudent if kept loaded that the hammer rest on an empty chamber. Your gun was manufacturered after the introduction of heat treating for cylinders, so it should be safe with any modern standard velocity ammunition. S&W do not recommend use of Plus P ammunition in guns made before 1957.

Heat treating of cylinders began at serial number 81287 in 1919, so 1919 to 1940 is as close as we can give you. It should be safe to fire with any current lead bullet ammunition. Avoid old high speed or rifle only jacketed ammo, as these have been reported as causing bulged barrels at times. Your gun lacks the modern hammer block safety so it would be prudent to keep the hammer down on an empty chamber.

Radagast, thanks for the great info once again. If you could, I could use a little more info on values for the 29-3. I have to attempt to finish prying it away from the current owner. It needs a place right next to my Lew Horton 1911.

Radagast, thank you for the response, I thought nobody who knew was reading the thread anymore! This beauty has the color case hardened hammer and trigger so I believe it is the factory nickel finish. It's a good totin' piece. 1977 huh, thanks again that is what I was wondering about.
