Your .38 Military & Police Post War was manufactured in the period 1948 to 1951. Serial range for those years was C1 to C223998, so 1948 seems likely.
The markings under the crane are assembly numbers used to track parts in the factory. They have no meaning after the gun is assembled.

Your Model 686 Distinguished Combat Magnum Stainless was manufactured in 1983. There is a recall out on all early 686s, with some magnum ammo it is possible for the primer to flow back around the firing pin, locking up the gun. Under the recall S&W will install a new firing pin and firing pin bushing free of charge. They will also pay shipping both ways. If the gun has been modified under the recall there will be an M stamped after the model number under the cylinder yoke. If you wish to have your gun modified give S&W a call and they will send you a shipping label.

If you feel like doing some reading on S&Ws I recommend the Standard Catalog of S&W by Jim Supica & Richard Nahas published by Gun Digest Books. It is the source of most of the info shared in this thread. A word of warning about your Model 19, they are prone to cracking their forcing cones if fired with 110 grain or 125 grain magnum ammo. Stick to the 158 grain loadings and you should be fine. Lots of info here:

model 19 and other k frame revolvers believe me I will be careful and take good care
of my 19-2 and 66-7. they both feel great and are fun to shoot.

F-111 John: Your Model 60 was manufactured between January 1986 (AHCxxxx) & July 1987 (AVBxxxx). My guess is mid 1986.
Any steel S&W made since 1957 should be fine to shoot with PlusP ammo.
Interesting screen name. As a child out in my row boat on a lagoon I was awestruck by a formation of three F111Cs that came in low over the sand dunes, swept back their wings directly overhead and took off down the coast. I can still play the memory in my head three decades later. At the age of 30 I stood on the sea cliffs of Sydney and watched a two ship formation avoid controlled air space by flying by below the cliff tops and about 50 feet out. Fantastic birds and fantastic pilots. The Pigs flew for the last time early this year. I was sad to see them go.

Radagast, Thanks for the info. The handgun was inherited from my father earlier this year when he passed away. Actually newer than I thought.
I was in the USAF from 1977-81 repairing avionics for the F-111A. Our F-111As were converted to EF-111A electronic warfare aircraft from 1980-84, and in a bone-headed move I'll never understand, the USAF retired them after Desert Storm. Aussie F-111Cs were the last F-111s flying, and sadly they were retired earlier this year.
Great aircraft, but amply replaced by the F-15E.

Your fathers gun is a .38 Military & Police Model of 1905 4th Change manufactured between 1915 & 1919. This is the predecessor to todays Model 10. It is built on S&Ws medium K frame and was the gun that introduced the .38 Special cartridge back in 1899. It is the Model of 1905 because a major design change occurred at that time. The "Fourth Change" refers to the fourth minor design change to the Model of 1905.
Your dad's gun lacks the modern internal hammer block safety. If dropped it could fire, so leave the chamber under the hammer empty.
It also predates heat treatment of cylinders, so stick to standard pressure leas ammo only. No jacketed, no PlusP and definitely no +P+ marked ammo. The sights should be regulated for the 158 grain lead round nose round.
Value is not high as several million M&Ps were manufactured ove the last 112 years, Say $250 in very good condition, $350 in excellent condition.

my buddy would like to clear up some controversy regarding the age of his .357
someone told him it was a 1967 version, but he and I think it is a 1976, and someone has transposed the numbers, not saying who.

hello,I am trying to find some info on an old S&W pistol that my Dad has,I havent seen the pistol as I live 3 states away from him. here is what I got over the phone from him. Pat. dates apr 9 89, dec 17 01,mar 7 04 july 15 05, aug 4 06 and may 4 08.serial # 88501 4 inch barrel, 6 shot 38 s&w special, U.S. service ctgs . I would appreciate any help in telling me what year it was made, what its worth in good condition or anything else you could tell me, thank you for your time

The reference on the barrel to U.S. Service Ctg is to the .38 Long colt cartridge that could also be fired through this gun. The .38 Special is a stretched Long colt case, lust as the .357 magnum is a stretched .38 Special case. S&W didn't want to stamp 'Colt' on their barrels. Colt of course returned the favour!
The Model of 1905 is the ancestor to todays model 10, aftermarket K frame grips will work, internal parts will be different as there have been many design changes over the last 100 years. Numrich Arms are a good source of second hand parts.
