lr45lc:
Your gun is a Model 29-2, manufactured in 1983. The Model 28 chambered was in .357 magnum.

Builder 1958:
Your .38 Military & Police Postwar Transitional manufactured between September 1945 (S811120) & March 1948 (S978924).
The serial number includes the S prefix.
The sights are fixed.
4905 is an assembly number, used to track parts in the factory. It has no meaning after the gun is completed.
Your gun is considered transitional because it has the pre-war 'long action' hammer and the late war/post war posirtive internal hammer block safety. Hence the S prefix. In late 1948 the long action was replaced with the new short action, wihich with some modifications continues in production today.

There have been posts in the past with THR members quite pleased with getting a transitional model for $300 to $350. I'd say you did quite well.

Just picked up one of my got to have guns and wondered about the manufactured date:
S&W 27-2
6" barrel
Square I think
pinned & recessed, target hammer, trigger, and stocks
blue
serial N362xxx
adjustable rear sight, no insert on front sight.
.357 caliber

The Family Victory.

Passed to my old man by his Uncle, the first revolver through my hands, my Sister's hands, and the gun that turned my Phobic wife into a Shooter in a single day.

Dad's asking me to order him one of the Bud's model 10's to preserve the wear on this one now.

I think i'll order the S&W letter for father's day, but I just felt like sharing this. It's been a while since It's been out of the safe just to be fondled. It's still fed a light diet of SWC's though.

4"
41000 under the crane.
Frame matches Cylinder (V and the SN at least)
The original grips are buried with the receipts, the Pachs just fill the hand for us big folks.

No clue what would be under the Obliterated mark, we've tried infrared photography without effect, any other suggestions that might bring it back out for identification?

Dnaltrop:
That serial number is probably from 1943.
If you mean the stippling on the frame under the Made in USA, my guess is someones initials. I'm not aware of any factory or departmental markings that have ever gone on that location. Usually they go on the left side of the frame.

Ford's will do a restoration to better than new, althought that destroys any value to a collector. http://www.fordsguns.com/

Ktmmudd:
Your Model 27-2 The .357 Magnum was manufactured in 1975 or 1976, the N3xxxxx range was used over those years. My guess is 1976.

Thank you very much, It will remain with it's original finish in perpetuity. ;)

I'd rather draw a moustache on Rodan's thinker with a Sharpie than deface this old friend.

That stippling has been a "great mystery" for decades, I guess it shall remain as such for now.

pittspilot:
Your Model 65-4 .357 Miltary & Police Heavy Barrel was manufactured in 1988.

bluemax01:
Model numbers were introduced in 1957, but some guns left the factory after that date without the model number stamping. Serial numbers had reached 125000 by the end of 1957, with an average annual production to that point of around 15600, so I'm confident your gun was made in the next year, 1958. Technically it is a Chiefs Special, not a Model 36 as there is no model number.

cwl1862:
Your Model 10-5 .38 Military & Police tapered barrel was manufactured in 1972.

motorcycle-charlie:
Your Model 19-3 Combat Magnum was manufactured in 1974.
Your model 36 Chiefs Special was manufactured in 1977 or 1978. Serial range for those years was J610000 to J670000. 1977 seems likely due to the position in the serial range.

h_lead:
Your Model 29-2 .44 magnum was manufactured in 1979 or 1980. Serial numbers in the N6xxxxx rang e were used during those years. As yours is high in that range 1980 seems likely.

sigep749:
Your Model 686-3 Distinguished Combat Magnum Stainless was manufactured in late 1989, serial numbers in the BED range shipped in August.

Geezer Glide:
Your Model 66-2 Combat Magnum Stainless was manufactured in late 1985.
