there is an S stamped left of the SN on the bottom of the frame
under the cylinder it is stamped 4905
there is a single site in the front that you line up through a flute in the top of the frame.

Your gun is a Model 29-2, manufactured in 1983. The Model 28 chambered was in .357 magnum.
Builder 1958:
Your .38 Military & Police Postwar Transitional manufactured between September 1945 (S811120) & March 1948 (S978924).
The serial number includes the S prefix.
The sights are fixed.
4905 is an assembly number, used to track parts in the factory. It has no meaning after the gun is completed.
Your gun is considered transitional because it has the pre-war 'long action' hammer and the late war/post war posirtive internal hammer block safety. Hence the S prefix. In late 1948 the long action was replaced with the new short action, wihich with some modifications continues in production today.

There have been posts in the past with THR members quite pleased with getting a transitional model for $300 to $350. I'd say you did quite well.

The Family Victory.
Passed to my old man by his Uncle, the first revolver through my hands, my Sister's hands, and the gun that turned my Phobic wife into a Shooter in a single day.
Dad's asking me to order him one of the Bud's model 10's to preserve the wear on this one now.
I think i'll order the S&W letter for father's day, but I just felt like sharing this. It's been a while since It's been out of the safe just to be fondled. It's still fed a light diet of SWC's though.

The original grips are buried with the receipts, the Pachs just fill the hand for us big folks.
No clue what would be under the Obliterated mark, we've tried infrared photography without effect, any other suggestions that might bring it back out for identification?

If you mean the stippling on the frame under the Made in USA, my guess is someones initials. I'm not aware of any factory or departmental markings that have ever gone on that location. Usually they go on the left side of the frame.
Ford's will do a restoration to better than new, althought that destroys any value to a collector. http://www.fordsguns.com/
