Identity and Date of Manufacture of S&W Revolvers

I haven't heard any complaints. FWIW My Model 28 is a 1968 gun and I'm more than pleased with the excellent fit and finish. In the 1970s S&W started pumping out product and stories about smooth bores, guns without forcing cones, etc, started to appear. Obviously the lemons were few and far between, but they were there.

You have a Model 10-5 .38 Military & Police tapered barrel manufactured in 1971 or 1972.
Serial range for those years was D330001 to D420000, so 1972 seems likely.
 
Hello to all. this is my first post and concerns my S&W 38 top break. If you could give me information about it, I would appraciate it. I want to shoot it for sure. That's the reason why I have several. I'm a Cowboy Action shooter "Chigger" SASS #32776 and I love to recreate the "OldWest".

Thanks for the quick reply. Out of curiosity, ever heard of S&W ever producing one of these with a Parkerized finish? I've never seen a Parkerized S&W besides the Victories. It definitely appears to be a factory finish.

S&W 38spl manufactured date

I am trying to buy a 38 spl S&W Model 36. Serial number is 148745.
It is a pinned barrel with flat latch. Not sure what that means but in the picture I see the pinned barrel.
What is flat latch?
Anyone know what year from the serial number?

Way back in the thread there are some pics of a Model of 1917 Army .45 owned by Drake Gmbh. It was a pre-war frame with a 1950s 4 line address and a Parkerized finish that I think was factory, although Old Fuff disagreed and thought it was a re-do. Based on that there is the possibility that some guns left the factory Parkerized during the '50s.

Flat latch means that the cylinder release latch is flat. Most S&Ws and all current production guns have a concave cylinder release. Early Model 36 Chief Specials had a flat release.
Serial number 149811 shipped in 1959, so its highly likely that your gun did as well, with late 1958 as a possibility.

Best I can give you in 1921 to 1927, serial range being 360000 to 500000. If I had to pick a year, I would say around 1925. It's a .38 Military & Police Model of 1905 4th Change. If the grips are factory pearl and not 1950s pimp special plastic grips, then they will be worth a bit in their own right.

1984, its a Model 60 (no dash) .38 Chiefs Special Stainless. The -1 was a three inch barrel, the -2 didn't arrive until 1987.
 
I just got a Model 10, no dash snubby. SN is C443XXX. My question is the right stock is stamped with the SN, did S&W stamp the number or write in in ? I've got another one with the SN hand written in the stock. The book says it shipped in 1960, maybe they did things differently then?
 
I sat down this morning and went through my Standard Catalog and it mentions the stamping was restarted in 1929 and went through the 1970's. The Model 66 I have with the written number and is a police dept. trade, 1977 year, but, the number doesn't match the gun..oh well..thanks.

Added info- chrome looking finish with wooden handle. Says S&W .38 special ctg. down one side of barrel, and just Smith & Wesson down other side. S&W medallion on both sides of grip.

Interesting. I just re-read that and you are correct. FWIW I'm fairly certain there has been mention on this forum of penciled serials on stocks in the late 40s at least.

Now that is an odd one.
If its a five shot with nickel finish, then it is a Model 36 Chiefs Special. Serial number 2692xx dates it to 1961 or 1962. The star means a factory re-work. As the Chiefs special came with either a two or three inch barrel I would guess the rework involved fitting a six inch barrel on special order.
if its a six shot then its a .38 Military & Police Model of 1905 4th Change manufactured in 1916.
1926 will be an assembly number, used to track parts in the factory. Model numbers were introduced in 1957, but were not always stamped on the gun.

Further info, just looked at your other thread. Definitely a .38 Military & Police from just after WW1. It predates heat treatment of cylinders, so don't use jacketed, semi jacketed or PlusP ammo in it. Stick to standard velocity lead loads.
It also predates the positive internal hammer block safety introduced during WWII, If dropped there is a small chance it could fire, so leave the chamber under the hammer empty.
Your gun has been re-finished after the factory re-work, as S&W did not nickel plate the hammer or trigger.

38Special;

I was given an old S&W 38special 6" pinned barrel. I was wondering if anyone could help me with the model. It has a fixed sight, and looks almost my old model 1q0, the serial # is ZD0410, taken from the butt. I do not see any #'s in the usual place. I have removed about 5 lbs of rust, cleanedit oild it and even fired it with 6 mild hand loads, any info would be appreciated
