.38 S&W Top Break Revolver

This was a new one on me and just holding it in hand will have me smiling most of the day. My buddy has a S&W Top Break 5-shot Hammer-less Revolver chambered in .38 S&W. There are some handling marks, but the nickel plating just shines. If this little handgun has had 20 rounds fired through it since it left the factory, I would be very surprised. I could not even tell him what model he has, so any info will be much appreciated. I am hoping the pictures might make the Brown Wizard smile too. Thank you in advance.

a) .38 S&W
b) 5" barrel ( I think - I was so excited I forgot to measure it)
c) round butt
d) 5 - shot / Double Action
e) fixed sights
f) 235989 - serial number taken from face of the cylinder
g) Model - is this a S&W Safety Hammerless ?

Yes it is and yes I am.
The .38 Safety Hammerless 5th Model was manufactured in the serial range 220000 to 261493 between 1907 and 1940.

Your friends gun falls between January 1912, serial number 232xxx and
March 1914, serial number 24139x.

Thank you, Radagast.

My buddy is about 75 years old, and he will be tickled to know his S&W Safety Hammerless 5th Model has been around over a century.

I have a S&W 38 Special CTG, serial number 522229. There is a number, 196, inside the yoke area. any ideas of age?
Thank you

This going to be a thread for those who are looking for a date of manufacture for their S&W revolvers.

We'd need to know :

a) caliber
b) bbl length (from cylinder to muzzle)
c) grips shape (round or square)
d) number of shots/cylinder bores
e) type of sights.
f) serial number, and if there is a letter in front of or anywhere near the s/n on the bottom of the grip
g) Model number if it is under the crane.
That number, if it is the s/n, should come from the butt of the grip (or under the barrel or face of the cylinder).

A picture or two is worth A LOT of words in this case...
S&W, J-Frame, M36-No Dash 3" pinned bbl, Ser#594335....
What is year of Manufacture?

gunnun:
Your Model 36 Chiefs Special falls between 1966 (serial number(392778) & 1969 (serial number 786544).
If the grips are original and have an uncheckered diamond around the screw, then 1968 or earlier. If no diamond, then 1968-1969.
If the cylinder latch is flat, then 1966 or earlier; if concave, 1966-1968.
The barrel should be the tapered style, the heavy barrel was designated the Model 36-1. If it is the stovepipe / heavy barrel, then I'm guessing its a unmarked 36-1, which makes it 1967 or later.

Tbro500:
If a six shot revolver, then you have a .38 Military & Police Model of 1905 4th Change manufactured between 1927 & 1930. This the predecessor to the modern Model 10.
Be aware that S&W does not recommend using PlusP rated ammunition in these older guns. It also lacks the positive hammer block safety introduced after a fatality with a dropped gun in 1944. I would treat it as a 5 shooter, leaving the chamber under the hammer empty.

If it is a 5 shot revolver, then it is a Model 36 Chiefs Special. See the post above this one on how to date it.
The numbers under the cylinder yoke are probably assembly numbers, used to track finished parts in the factory. They have no meaning after the gun is assembled.

S&W 38 Special

Thanx Radagast for the info.
It is a 6 shot and I will be mindful of the safety procedure, although I don't intend on firing it.

a) .38 Spec.
b) 4"
c) Square
d) 6
e) Fixed
f) C9098XX
g) 10-6

I'm thinking this is a 1966-67 model, just wondering if it could be narrowed down a little. It's in good shape with some holster wear and great S/A trigger pull. Had one of the NYSP Mod 10 .357 years and stupidly traded it off, it was a great shooter. My holy grail is a 3" RB K frame at a "reasonable" price. Thanks for any information.

Thanks for the reply. Since I'm a '66 model, this gun became special to me, it's also in better shape than I am.

Had the pleasure of meeting Roy Jinks this past summer at a lecture. He's tall, especially compared to me, and a very nice man.

I'm sure this will shoot every bit as well as my old .357 version I had. Thank you again for the quick reply.

Just picked up a 14-3 at a estate auction.
.38 special
6"barrel
square butt
6 shot
adjustable rear sight
Serial# 8K263xx
Model 14-3
Any idea on when this was made?

mr.e moose:
Your Model 14-3 K38 Masterpiece was manufactured in 1975.

Here's one for you experts. I've been looking to buy one like this and could use a bit more info (i.e. data of manufacture). It's a S&W 629 .44Mag 6 shot trail boss. I'm interested to know what version it is and what year it is built.
a).44mag/special caliber
b) 3" bbl length (from cylinder to muzzle)
c) not sure: grips shape (round or square)
d) 6 number of shots/cylinder bores
e) type of sights.
f) serial number, and if there is a letter in front of or anywhere near the s/n on the bottom of the grip: RSR7051
g) Model number if it is under the crane. Not sure beyond what I've provided.
That number, if it is the s/n, should come from the butt of the grip (or under the barrel or face of the cylinder).
Thanks,
B

I'm not an expert, I just pretend to be one on the internet.
The first variant was manufactured between 1996 & 1999, the Model 629 Magnum Hunter Trail Boss for RSR Distributors. 500 guns manufactured on 629-4 & 629-5 frames.
Stainless steel, N frame, 3 inch Mag-Na-Ported barrel, six shot fluted cylinder, round butt, Hogue rubber grips with lanyard stud, red ramp front sight, white outline rear, engraved Trail Boss on side plate, product code 103408. I have read a claim that 100 guns were reported as shipping with standard, non-ported barrels. No internal lock.
Serial numbers RSR9215 & RSR95xx were from this group, so I expect yours is one of the earlier ones from the first edition. If a 629-4, then 1996-1997. If a 629-5, then 1997-1999.
