Long time lurker, first time poster - with a question.

Son in law has a 586 (no dash), 6" bbl, nickel, SN AEM0724. Could you fine folks look up the date of birth?
I guess it would be between '81 (first introduced) and '85 (start of -1)

Thanks in advance

Gnslgr:
1984. If no M stamp near the serial number, then it is subject to a recall to fit a new firing pin and bushing. S&W will pay shipping both ways. If stamped with an M, then it has already been modified. The recall is due to primer flow back locking up some guns.

Everything Radagast mentioned about the recall and "M" stamp is true.
I think it should be said that most people never really have that problem and there was one specific ammo (I think federal 357's) that really gave the guns problems.
There are collectors that prefer the guns without the modification. So if your gun is a safe queen or you mainly shoot 38's through it, you may not want the mod done. My 586-1 has the mod done but if it wasn't modified before I got it, I likely wouldn't send it in unless I started having the problems.

I used to state the same thing, that is was very rare. Until a THR member reported his gun was locked up right after I mentioned how rare it was. Now I let people know and they can decide if they want to go through the inconvenience or not.

Best to start a new thread in the revolver forum for that question, preferably with some good quality photos. You'll get more answers. I'm in Australia, my knowledge of current US price is limited. Price varies by region and is largely dependent on condition.

Okay, I just received a new one.S&W 2nd model Hand ejector.Serial #5722X . Nice period holster chambered in .455.Year of manufacture ?

Storm Shadow:
Your Model 10-10 .38 Military & Police Heavy Barrel was probably manufactured in early 1992. Guns in the BKZ2xxxx range shipped in February of that year.

mr.e moose:
Your gun is probably a .455 Mark II Hand Ejector 2nd Model manufactured for Britain or Canada between 1915 & 1917. This was a Triple Lock without the ejector shroud. Check the rear face of the cylinder. If in the white, or lacking a serial number, it may have been machined to accept .45 Colt after the war.
If it lacks the 3rd lock at the yoke, then its a .44 Hand Ejector Second Model made sometime between 1926 & 1940, in an unlisted caliber. That would probably warrant a factory letter from the S&W historian to verify its provenance.

Picked up this little darling in the used case today. Looking for the year of manufacture.
Aside from the turn ring its in excellent condition.

a)38+p
b) 2inch
c) square
d) 5
e) fixed
f) CPE8763

Looking at two S&W revolvers: a Model 12 serial number D453XX and a Model 28-2 serial number N567XXX. Any help you can provide in regards to their date of manufacture would be greatly appreciated.

bannockburn:
Model 12 .38 Military & Police Airweight dates to 1972. It uses the Aluminium KA frame, which is thinner than the steel K frame in the grip area. K frame grips will not be an exact fit.

Mode 28-2 Highway Patrolman falls in the period 1978 to 1980, unfortunately the Standard Catalog of S&W does not give a year to year breakdown of serial numbers for those years.

Radagast

Thanks for the info! Both are in excellent condition and I have always wanted a Model 28 with a 6" barrel but that Model 12 is mighty tempting.
