wence5: The pinned and recessed Model 629 no dash 8 & 3/8 inch barrel was introduced in 1981 and replaced by the 629-1 non pinned and recessed in 1982. The N8xxxxx serial range was used from 1980 to 1983. My guesstimate is your gun was made in 1982 as it is a transitional gun with features of the 629 & 629-1. S&W don't waste parts.

Thanks Radagast. I figured it might have been a transition model, but just wanted to know from someone with a little experience with Smith's.

6 shot 38? model help

Rada,

Thanks in advance--I have a 6 shot revolver with 4 side plate screws, and I believe to be a 38 but am not certain the serial number is 514165, and need to know the model number and can you confirm the caliber--no markings on barrel to this effect, it is a short 2" and nickle plated. Again your help is invaluable!

knee-dragger777:
If a medium K frame, then it's a .38 Military & Police Model of 1905 4th change, manufactured between 1927 & 1930. The barrel probably isn't original, IIRC the first snubbie K frame was around 1938. There should be a fifth screw in front of the trigger guard. The right side of the frame should be stamped Made in USA.

If a small I frame, with round butt, then it is a .32 Hand Ejector third Model manufactured between 1927 & 1942. As above, the barrel will have been cut down. Originally the barrel was marked .32 long CTG on the left side.
If a small I frame and square butt, then it is a .32 Regulation Police. Again it has been cut down. The serial number will be stamped on the front strap of the frame instead of the bottom. There will be a patent date on the bottom of the grips and a notch in the backstrap of the frame to accept the round to square butt conversion grips.

How about a model 10-5?
4 inch standard barrel
Serial # C9276**

It has a grooved trigger and diamond target grips. Fantastic trigger too.

fireman 9731:
Your Model 10-5 .38 Military & Police tapered barrel was manufactured in 1966 or 1967. Serial range for those years was C8100533 to C999999, so it could fall in either year.
The trigger is either after market or was special ordered,

Thanks for the info! The trigger is certainly Smith & Wesson, may of been special ordered. The grips don't fit perfectly, are their serial numbers supposed to match the guns?

It seems to of been fired very little, the double action is the best I have ever used. Lighter and smoother than my 10-8, however the the 10-8 has a little lighter single action pull.

The bluing on the cylinder and side plate are starting to turn plum. I guess thats just from age?

They should be serial numbered to the gun. Diamond grips were used till 1968, so they are period correct. Target stocks were not standard on the Model 10, as they are not fitted I am assuming they are replacements. If serialed to the gun then the trigger may also be factory fitted.
Plum bluing may be the result of age, reaction to a chemical or poorly prepared metal.

G'day Cajun. The N1xxxxx serial range was used from 1969 to 1972. The last 3000 guns in the Sxxxxx serial range shipped concurrently during 1969 & 1970. As N frame production for the previous few years ran between 15000 & 25000 units, I'm guesstimating late 1970 for your gun.

Deba:
Your Model 10 .38 Military & Police was manufactured in 1960.
The grips are not original, and the front sight insert is probably aftermarket.
This reduces the collector interest, which is not high to begin with, there were several million guns produced in variants of that model.
Police trade in Model 10s sell for $280-$330. Yours is in excellent condition and is worth a little more in a private sale, $350 to $400 is my guesstimate. A dealer or pawnbroker will give you much less. If you need to sell it then a face to face transaction is best.

Radagast,

I have a 67-1 with the SN AHY64xx. I've seen reports (on the S&W forums) that AHY guns were made sometime in 1985 but that the letter string wasn't listed in the Standard Catalog. Do you have any info on this prefix?

Thanks!

From a list provided by THR member Kernel:
AHY71XX …………. Oct 29, 1985 (M67-1 4“) 102802 nils 1pc-box 5302

So October 1985 seems likely.

Thanks for the information.

I am interested in selling the Model 10 .38 Military & Police blue steel 4" barrel. if anyone is interested. See thread #6219 and 6220
$325.00

SOLD

Need help confirming model #

I have an aluminum frame 38 caliber revolver J frame with an internal hammer, but no grip safety. Three screw side plate, and the serial is "BPE6012". It looks like it has "model D42" behind the cylinder pivot. This is the only 42 I have seen without a grip safety, and is that a "D" and if so what does it represent. As always thanks in advance!

How about 642?

That would be consistent with your guns description.

Serial number would be too, a 642 made Nov, 1993.

The Model 42 was the Centennial Airweight with grip safety made from 1952-1974, so they would be out of your serial number range.

The Model 042 Centennial Airweight (No grip safety.) was made only one year, in 1992, so they would not match your serial number either.

Anyway, there never was a D42 Model.
So, I think it is 642.
