Idiot needs help!

Here goes fellas.

I just got my a Ruger 22/45, brought it home, disassembled it and began putting it back together. This is when I encountered a problem.

I fit the mainspring housing into place and tried to pull the bolt to check function. The bolt would only pull back about halfway so I tried to remove the mainspring housing and see what I screwed up. Now the mainspring housing won't come back out.:banghead:

What should I do now??? I have checked out Bullseye's page and I'm still unable to fix it. Should I try to pry the mainspring housing out with a screwdriver (doesn't sound very smart, but I have no idea)? Take it to a gunsmith?

Please fellas, help me fix this thing so I can take 'er to the range and shoot the hell out of it on Monday!!

Sounds like the hammer is back; you have to get the hammer in the forward/released position again. Push the slide forward, point the pistol downward and pull the trigger (if it's a MKIII version 22/45 insert a magazine before doing this ). If it doesn't work at first, repeat but hold the trigger down and gently tap the muzzle on a soft piece of wood. Jiggling the mainspring sometimes helps as well.

It took me forever to learn how to dissasemble and reassemble my Mark III but after the first time it's relatively easy.
you may want to take it back to where you bought it and see if they can help.

When you try to remove the mainspring housing is the mag installed?? It has to be removed to remove the mainspring housing. Keep at the Gun Talk website. Bullseye can help you out if you give him ALL the information and follow the directions to the letter.

The mag is out.

I can insert the mag if I leave the mainspring housing out, but it will only go in roughly halfway when the mainspring housing is in place. The mag is hitting something, but what?

I'll try tapping the muzzle.

What would prevent the mainspring housing from coming out?

Ok, looking at this again; you may have the hammer strut positioned wrong. Is your problem that the mainspring housing is hanging up in this position and you can't get it the rest of the way out of the frame?

If so, try this: get the bolt closed and the mainspring closed. (Note: see edit below)

The mainspring needs to be closed so this portion of the lever will not interfere with the magazine.

Turn the pistol inverted with the magazine well facing up and towards your chest; angle the muzzle up and away at about 45 degrees. Now pull and hold the trigger in this position. Reach under and undo the mainspring housing it should come right out.

MKIIIs will require the magazine be inserted for this step.

EDIT: Actually, this will work on a MKII with the magazine housing partially open: just invert pistol and elevate the muzzle, pull and hold the trigger then work the housing lever. I believe the MKIII is going to need the magazine inserted to work the trigger enough.

Grab a paper clip with a pair of pliers and use the loop end to pull the mainspring catch up. Then follow the advice above to drop the hammer and make sure the hammer strut is centered in the mainspring before latching it back down. it does take some practice.
