Idiots at my school think I'm a murderer.

.......your friends in high school are not idiots, they are just kids. They are immature and have not experienced enough about life to make informed judgments on complex subjects they have no personal experience with. Instead of slamming them, you need to inform and educate them. Calling them idiots just because of their ignorance on this subject proves you are on the same maturity level as they are. Believe me, once you get outta school and get out into the real world, you will meet and have to deal with plenty of legitimate idiots.

In most of the schools around here wearing a T-shirt with gun reference will get you sent home. Yet today, JROTC is having air rifle drills at a local HS. Go figure.

Keep those comments in mind when applying to colleges.

I had to take a public speaking class, and we got to pick our topics. My final speech's opening lines:

"He who has no sword, sell his cloak and buy one. In a nutshell: your safety is in your own hands. Times have changed, ladies and gentleman. This is my sword, and I am never outside of home or school without it." Cue to powerpoint picture of my CZ and carry license, and a couple gasps.

Then I spent ten minutes explaining why I got it, how I got it, the benefits of a CCL, and the statistics on why CCL holders are, by the numbers, better citizens. By the end of the speech, the pro-gun guys stood to applaud, the fence-sitters accepted that carrying may be worthwhile, the anti-gunners were confused because I wasn't violent and everything I said made sense and had quoted statistics, and everyone left with a little education. Some even told me they were going to go get a carry license now.

Keep that sort of thing in mind, and do the same thing when you can. Kids grow up, and intelligent people get better.

One girl who read it never came back to class. When I saw her again through a mutual friend, man she was terrified of me. All because I, in great detail, wrote about my combat experiences.

Amazing how many are so clueless about guns and what actually goes on at war. I found that no matter how many numbers, facts or figures back up your side, guns kill people and are evil and need to be stopped. Like they are a living breathing thing.

Yea and 25 years ago they were using 22 Rifles.

OP lucky the kid didn't report him cause nowdays he would get a suspended and checked out by some shrink.

In a high school (pretty much anywhere in the US) in 2011, I wouldn't have any firearms literature on me. You don't want to risk someone interpreting a weapons policy or threat policy in a way that endangers your path to graduation with a clean record. It ain't right, but it is real.

Now, post-secondary is different. In classes I have taken I don't hesitate to use firearms subjects in assignments, whether it's a speech class or putting together a technical how-to presentation. You should still consider the dynamics of the school and individual teacher (no point in getting a 'F' for selecting an 'inappropriate subject' and having to escalate about it), but if it's clean, professional, and meets their rubric then you usually don't have problems and can hopefully help open some eyes along the way.

California is making a turn around. Sacramento is demanding more CCWs and its only a matter of time before the $500 to have one is challenged (especially in this economy).

I speak about guns everywhere, and welcome the challenge of debating them from anyone in front of anyone. The republican-bias card does not work if you are not a republican, so those fallacies are at a particularly bad loss when debating. Being in the Independent Party forces people to have to debate with me on a one-on-one basis, since you can not quantify us by others in the party. I bring up NRA news every day at my University and welcome the challenges they bring. EVERY SINGLE person must do this, it is their duty as an American to be an activist every day of their lives. I am about to transfer to a University, known for its activists, and I am already welcoming every challenge I will face.\

God bless America and our courage.

O.K. Here is one great way to respond to people like this. You ask them if they have a computer...are they "on line"?...have a modem and digital camera? Then they have THE ASSAULT WEAPON of child molesters!! They should just throw it in the trash...PRONTO!:D  :fir

Just burns me up to get that crap thrown at me about my firearms!

I feel all better now....thank you.

I'm also a Junior in HS, and last friday in Study Hall I pulled the latest issues of Small Arms Review and Shotgun News and read them both. Not only did no one freak out, no one even noticed.

My science project involves shotguns, the teacher didn't mind. Last year a friend of mine did an experiment with an M1 Garand and got a few prizes.

Me and a different friend were on a computer in the school library looking at a review of the Barrett M82A1, complete with hi-res photos and everything.

We didn't notice the principal walk up behind us.:uhoh:

She had a problem with it. :uhoh:

She reminded us that school computers were for researching assignments only, and we had to finish the article on our own time.:D

Pretty much everyone knows that I'm 'the gun guy', and nobody (including faculty and staff) really has an issue with it.

I guess it's a different culture in Tennessee.

Hey, I had a prof confiscate a gun magazine from me, pretty much because we had a test coming up, and he wanted to read it himself!

Other than that, reactions I've gotten have run the gauntlet, with the only bad reactions (aside from a certain family member) being at school. Even those were admittedly not that bad.

On a near-daily basis, I read something on this website that reminds me...yet again...why, as a gun owner, I choose to remain here in South Dakota. The urban paranoia surrounding guns simply hasn't affected the majority of people here. Most people own guns, and those that don't don't seem to actively campaign against them. A copy of Guns and Ammo can probably still be found in many schools' magazione racks. Many monday mornings in November involve swapping a few hunting stories before getting down to schoolwork. I understand why there are those who opppose such a lifestyle, but hope that I'm dead and gone before such attitudes become the prevalent ones in my area, and I'll do whatever I can to ensure our traditions aren't wiped out....

When I was in High School back in the late 70's you could get a varsity letter in... trap shooting. That's right! It was cool to see the kids on the bus with their shotguns over their shoulder. Ah, the good ol' days.

Pretty sad. Though not surprising. Schools nowadays tend to be a major bastion for anti-2A in many states. Though go figure they are gun free zones, shootings are sensationalized. In states like NY and CA they pile it on full in schools. I mean a kid simply makes a gun shape with their finger and they get suspended.

I am surprised they have not banned any articles about firearms yet. I am sure some schools would make a rule against it.

Some peoples is so dumb!
you can thank the media for a lot of the negative attitudes towards guns. actually, i do kind of understand where they are coming from. i do not agree with it, but if you look at a typical news reporters experience with firearms, you may understand some of it. they are book smart people, with academic backgrounds. not many of them will have come from a hunting / shooting sports family. their actual experience with firearms comes from being sent on asignment to cover a shooting, or a war of some type. that is about all they get. so, naturally, their veiwpoint of guns are bad. it would be like sending a king out to do his own wash in midieval days. it would be a horrible experience. the big problem, is that with only negative firearms experiences, that is going to be their only point of veiw. and after they have seen several people with their lives taken by violent crime. they will have no interest in going to a range to shoot their neighbors firearm. their immediate reaction will be fear and anxiety. why, would they even want to hold something that will undoubtedly kill someone. while i am certain that some of them realize that there are legitimate reasons for owning firearms, they are still going to rely on their experiences. all of us do. if your only experience with eationg honey came from stealing it from an active bee hive, and you were stung repeatedly, you would not want anything to do with honey again. even looking at it on a store shelf will flood your brain with that bad expeirence earlier. so, how do we get academic people and the media exposed to the shooting sports at an earlier time in their life? one way would be for colleges to have a shooting team. but that will be a headlong battle for many schools, because they are run by academic people that have no firearm experience to begin with. then there is the whole firearms in school thing to deal with. i do not know how other states deal with this, but michigan makes no distinction between an air rifle and a firearm. if you walk onto campus with an air rifle, you might as well have a 458 lott in the eyes of the law. some police officers may deal with it differently, but as for the law, they are the same thing. no matter how you look at it, we are going to have an uphill battle to fight just to keep and bear our firearms. now, California, and their people, are a whole different breed anyway. Arnold is certainly NOT firearm freindly, and he has been in power way to long in my opinion. to many laws that serve a very limited percentage of the people have went across his desk, and he has signed them into law. you guys out there need to get rid of him, and get someone with a good head on their shoulders, and start repealing some of those laws! firearm education is our best freind, but the academic community is not much help there. i really wish i had a wonderful plan that would cure all of this ignorance. but i do not. we need to get kids exposed to firearms, so they can have an understanding of them, before the media and academic community have a chance to poison their heads. 40 years ago, when i was in school, things were a LOT different. i could actually bring a 300 magnum shell into class for show and tell. and i got my firearm safety class in junior high school. now, having a firearm logo on a pencil will get you expelled! do you think just maybe the academic crowd has gone just a little overboard!

One of our biggest problems is in how we address the parnoia. Remember that they are paranoid because (a) they don't understand and (b) they have been taught to be. But, if you treat them as parnoid you will immediatly kick their defense button as a form of self protection, or to protect the integrity of the person who convinced them that owning a gun and being interested in the physics of it, or even self protection is bad. The question is who is teaching you (all of us for that matter) how to respond in an intelligent manner that makes them understand better? How do you say, "The government you expect to protect you is us. We are the government here in the U.S. The person who wears the police uniform on the street can be the same person who lives just down the street and you don't quiver when he or she walks into a room. What makes the soldier in Iraq different than a soldier here on our home soil? Do you want to take away his rifle and pistol because he is here and not in some other country? The gun is not nor has it ever been a problem. Left alone it won't move. In the hand of a well trained, good intentioned person it is used for sport, it is a tool, it is a commodity which helps our economy in the form of buying and selling and stocks. Just remember that Hitler had to take the guns away from the common people in order to open the door for his taking over country after country after country because the people could no longer protect themselves. He used the secret police to enforce it, and then turn the guns on his own people by the millions. And he was the government that said he would protect the people. If you want to be concerned, be concerned that you don't question the use of the word "safety" when it is used as they take away rights after rights."

In junior high?

It's never to early to start. At least get a t-shirt with a logo.

You know, I started to disagree with this line of thinking, but upon reflection, this technique has worked for other minority groups. So why not.
