If I had $500 to spend on a .22, I would...

walther p22 add laser scope and barrel extender, with left over money buy lots of ammo..............

If adding a suppresor is planned look for something that comes already threaded or can be threaded easily. If you go with the Ruger a Tactical Solution Pac-Lite upper puts you right in the $500 area. Another fun option is a Ruger Charger with a threaded barrel. A little bit big for a pistol but good accuracy and all the 10/22 aftermarket works on it.

CZ Kadet

Add a few more dollars and get the CZ Kadet.....Better than any of those others. You will love it. Or...spend $800 and have the CZ75 in 9mm and the conversion to .22. Two great guns.

I would get a SIG 226 Classic 22lr. This is not the SIG conversion kit and it is not the Mosquito. It’s a from-the-factory .22lr. It can convert to a center fire caliber, too. http://www.sigsauer.com/Products/ShowCatalogProductDetails.aspx?categoryid=7&productid=260

It runs around $500 retail and online. It’s a few hundred dollars cheaper to buy the .22 and convert up, than it is to buy a 9mm and convert down:
226 in .22lr: $608 (MSRP) + $350-$400 conversion to 9mm = around $1000
226 in 9mm: $975 (MSRP) + $350-400 conversion to .22lr = around $1350

I was ready to pick up a Buckmark URX until I handled the Sig. Wow. The ability to upgrade to a 9mm on the same frame is just a bonus.

I had a similar quandary. I bought a 75 year old Woodsman for $460, am shooting the heck out of it, and, lacking any children of my own, bequeathing it to my one of my grandnephews so that he can do the same when I die in 15-20 years from now (if I'm lucky) when I'm near 80. The second will get my granddad's Remington 12-A, the third my dad's Winchester SxS 12 gauge.

...and the answer is:

A used Buckmark Standard for $250. Found it this morning at a nearby pawn shop, after looking over much of central Kentucky trying to find one in stock. Will probably order a Tactical Solutions threaded barrel and start working on tax stamp/suppressor soon.

Same here -- I got a 71 year old Woodsman for $225, and I shoot the heck out of it -- I've shot 3/4" groups at 25 yards with this gun, and knocked down squirrels more than 50 yards away. My grand daughters get first pick, but I also have a nephew and 4 great-nephews who will get something.
