- recoils and jumps similar (proportionally diminutive) to big brother cal. semi's
- operation / manipulation similar to big brother cal's
- the biggest departure (training / practice purposes for carryover) from larger semi's is the ergonomics of a small frame / trigger reach altering shooting mechanics
- IMHO more fun to plink with than dedicated, heavier, longer barreled .22's but don't see it as ever being as inherently accurate

Shot thousands of rounds out my SR22....other than the occasional dud, and when I tried to shoot 22 LONGS it's been dead solid reliable if you load the mags correctly. My kids sometimes have a hard time loading the mags. It eats anything you buy cheap, low velocity, high velocity anything...unlike some other plastic 22's there's no need to feed it top of the line ammo. It just works.

On a side note, mine is my fishing pistol, it's been dunked many many times.....I take it home spray it down with WD or whatever thin stuff I may have in the garage and then follow it with brake cleaner and a good cleaning....no issues. The perfect gun for water IMHO.

Down side.....backwards safety, and don't bother to try and shoot it DA, always thumb the hammer back. Sights are another question but I haven't beat mine up so I guess plastic is okay.

I bought an SR22 a couple years ago and really like it but then I let my wife shoot it. Now it is her gun! I have had her shoot many of my others but the River is the only 1 she likes

Another Ruger SR22 fan here. I never gave them any thought until I was shooting two different ones on the same day. Two friends and I were shooting and they each had one. That day we shot hundreds of rounds of CCI ammo through them. They were good enough accurate and there were no issues.

I bought my own within two days. Seems a little funny the rear sight is so high...but it works.

MINE....

I put over 3000 rounds through it in my first year of ownership, and another 3000 through it over the next 2 subsequent years. The only reason it doesn't see more use from me now is I picked up a Beretta M9-22. I'll never sell my SR-22 though. Everyone that shoots it enjoys it, and it's especially easy for younger/smaller shooters to hold.

In my not-so humble opinion,,,
It's the best duty style .22 semi-auto on the market.

I take a lot of college kids who have never fired a gun to the range,,,
This pistol has replaced (by a slim margin only) my Bersa Thunder 22 as the favorite training pistol.

It's reliable, accurate, and fits most hands very well,,,
I also like that it has a de-cocker and an exposed hammer.

When I am showing an absolute newbie how to use a semi-auto,,,
I want an exposed hammer so they can see how it works,,,
And so I can teach them how to lower it safely.

The SA/DA action is also very useful in training newbies,,,
It allows them to experience both modes of operation.

Another small .22 pistol that is very nice is the S&W M&P 22 Compact,,,
It performs as well as the Ruger does but has an internal hammer and no de-cocker.

That doesn't give the varying options for teaching that the Ruger gives.

If someone asks me to recommend a .22 pistol,,,
The Ruger is one I always mention.
