I`ve been out of guns for a while but have started to replace the guns that I sold years ago. I`m looking for a decent 22 lr for target and plinking. Is there anything besides the Rugar 22 I should be looking at. I sold some very good guns years ago a colt woodsman and a high standard victor. I dont need anything in those catagories but would like something thats accurate, I may do a little hunting with it also. I`ve seen the Walter [ I think it was a #22] I`m trying not to spend over $400, what do you think I should consider.

Number one pistol to consider is the Buck Mark URX Practical. Great shooter, comfortable grip, right price. I put a 25mm Ultra Dot on mine for target shooting and it will group very well with the right ammo. Mine likes Blazer .22 ammo best. Others may have different preferences. I've shot my friend's Ruger mark III several times, glad I bought the Browning instead. If you're going to hunt with it, get the 30mm sight instead. Little more field of view.

The only handgun I have is a GP100 I bought new this past summer and it's a great gun,but since then I had a chance to use my SIL's Ruger Super Six (I think that's what it's called) and I absolutely fell head-over-heels in love with it. Very accurate and a pleasure to shoot. I love the feel of pulling back the hammer and all the parts moving inside. I told him if he ever sells it that I'll beat anyone's offer. Not likely, though. His is an older model and was handed down to him by his grandfather. I don't think it's ever leaving his side, but I've since seen used ones in the $400 and less price range. And it gives you the option of 22mag with it's extra cylinder. Worth checking out for sure,in my opinion, though I've shot very few handguns.

Sorry,I hadn't noticed this thread was in auto handguns.

I have a Ruger mark II my dad has a buckmark both are good guns, and I would recommend either. I haven't shot any other 22 hand guns so no help on the Walther.

This question comes up about once a month or so. Staying in your price range, the majority of responses always come down to the Browning and the Ruger. Plenty of models to chose from with either manufacturer, and lots of aftermarket parts for both. Handle at least one model of each, decide on whose ergonomics you like, and then pick a model that has the features you want.
Me? I've got a pair of Buckmarks.

Another vote for Buckmark - whatever model has the features you like. But on the other hand. If you have or are going to buy another handgun, for carry or home defense or range use, you may want to consider a .22 conversion kit for it. Most Sig, CZ, or 1911s will take conversion kits and are generally quite accurate.

Browning or Ruger, both have numerous models to choose from and will last your lifetime and more. You can pass it on to your kids or grandkids. Don't fall for that pot metal stuff by Sig and Walther.

I like my S&W 22a

Gets about the same groups at 10 yards from a rest. Could definitely cover 10 rounds with a quarter.

Sorry for the poor quality. 22a is also VERY easy to break down. Got it from buds for $252 shipped.

The Browning and Ruger have been recommended to death, so I'll spare you those.

If you're looking for something fun, reliable and different - take a look at the GSG (ATI imported) 1911 .22.

I've had one since they came out, and absolutely love it. It comes to the range with me *every* time.
If you're interested, search for other threads on it where I and others have given more details about our experiences. Or just ask, and I'll re-type them here. :)

Do you by chance have a link to the maker of this gun. I googled it buy only came up with people selling them.
Thanks

I shot one at the range a few months ago and it felt nice in my hand but when i went to point it i felt that the grip had too much of a cant on it. Was very reliable and pretty accurate too though.

GSG website (the manufacturer)

ATI website (the importer)

Neither site is much to look at though. My best recommendation is to find one in a shop and give it a close-up look in person.

It has a few minor quirks, which you can find more info about in other threads.
Most notably, if you get one with a cheap pot metal barrel bushing, contact ATI and they will send you a steel replacement for free (some people have had the bushing break, so it's a good preventative measure). They're shipping out newer ones with a steel one, but either way it's no big deal.

Great gun. Absolutely love it. :)

Edit: by the way, i own (and have only seen) the regular one with wood grips. I can't speak for the black-gripped one, or the "tactical" one.
