If you could be good with 1 type of weapon

I'm a 3gun competitor, so I've given some pondering on this.

In actuality my weakness is pistol. I shoot at about an IDPA Expert, or IPSC B class level with a pistol.

However with a shotgun or a rifle, I'm dang good. With a rifle, I can hold my own against pretty much anybody, and with a shotgun, (in 3gun style at least, not trap or skeet or anything like that) I'm one of the best I've ever seen. And I'm not bragging or anything, I just have always had a gift for running a shotgun fast.

So my rifle and shotgun skills are really good. My pistol needs a lot of work. Pistol is what keeps me from winning. I can look over match scores, and I'm always at the top of rifle and shotgun stages, but only middle of the pack with a pistol.

So if I could suddenly gain massive skills, I would want it to be with a handgun.

It's not the most important weapon--it's which weapon would you want the most skill with.

Most people want the most skill with the most important weapon. Just being practical.

As a civilian, the most likely scenario in which I would need a gun to survive would be close quarters defense, as opposed to hunting for food or long-range assault/defense. I voted pistol for this reason, and I have it with me most of the time. If I found out I was deploying anytime soon, I'd quickly change my answer. How cool would it be to be "uncanny" with an M203?
