If you could have only one handgun, what would you choose?

Well, My handguns are all fighting it out in the gun safe right now so I'll get back to you when there's a winner.

In the revolver arena, my 327 JM is coming to grips with my 629 PC hunter with my model 29 snub waiting to get tagged in.

In the meantime, we have a real dust-up going on in the pistol arena with all the various Sig p22x 357/40's fighting it out with the Tangfolio 10mm/40's. The reason the Tangy's are having a hard time is that the Sigs are sporting .22lr and 9mm conversion kits :what:

I suppose that, by the rules my Tangy hunter 10mm will win but it looks to be a long fight night ...

Update: The 329 is now complaining that it gets no love :(

If we're talking post apocalyptic scenario or war zone bla bla bla I'd probably want something along the lines of my Walther PPS 40 cause I'm going to have a longgun of some sort and would much prefer an extra long gun mag than a heavier pistol.
If it's some sort of draconian law and I have one handgun for all my shooting wants I'd build a STI framed 10mm with commander length slide and a profiled titanium compensator.

Practically speaking (use wise) one of these .22s. Usually one or the other is beside me on the front porch.

Wishfully speaking one of the several other semi autos or revolvers from the safe

First actual post here, outside the introduction area. Seems like a good place to begin.

My choice would be a stainless Super Blackhawk in .44 Magnum, with a 5 1/2" barrel, standard SAA grip frame, fluted cylinder, and hardwood grips. (rosewood or select walnut)
Why? Well, utility, a fondness for single actions, adjustable sights, and versatilty in loading.
You can reload anything from sedate lead RNFP 200 grain Cowboy loads to JSP 300 grain magnum bear stoppers with equal accuracy.

Since self-defense is the first duty of my handguns, and, to perform that duty it needs to be concealable regardless of how I'm dressed, I would go with the Kahr MK40. If I can only have one it isn't going to be plastic.

HK VP9. The most versatile pistol I have. And it's between it and my 1911 for best accuracy.

It would depend on the scenario as to why I am limited. It would also depend on if I had to take one of my existing guns or I had the luxury of going out and buying “my last handgun”.

Currently own:
If it were a temporary evacuation situation I would probably grab my Glock 19X.
If it were because of something much more dreadful or drastic and I was limited due to carry weight and carry space I would grab my S&W 327NG.
If it were some government edict and I were still alive after the revolution I would probably be in prison so I wouldn’t have the ability to own a gun...:p

If I had to only own one gun and had the luxury of going out and buying it I would probably get myself either an S&W 627 or a 327 TRR8.

I have to really think about my own question! How about the rest of you!?!
One pistol: My 1911 Gold Cup. I can also shoot .45 Super. I have a drop in barrel for .400 CorBon and a Nelson .22 Conversion.

Now....if you mean one gun/one cartridge.....then it is an entirely different choice. Probably my Ruger SBH in .44 Mag. The problem with any large bore gun is the amount of ammo one can carry and the space it takes up.
My other choice would be a .22 Magnum of some type (probably a PMR-30). A hundred rounds takes less space than 50 .44s.

Right now it would be a full-size Government Model in .45 ACP. Though I really like that Lightweight Government bannockburn has.

The 1911 and the .45 ACP are adequate for anything I'd realistically want a handgun to do. A Lightweight Commander might be a touch more practical if regular concealed carry was a requirement. But the 5" steel frame gun makes a decent practical match pistol, a good paper plinker, is good for bowling pin shoots, can work on steel plates and is OK carried in an OWB holster or sitting in a nightstand.

It feels weird to write that as I've usually considered myself a medium-frame, medium caliber double action revolver fan.

1916 vintage S&W with post WWII barrel and cylinder.. I can
shoot 45 ACP with moon clips, 45Auto Rim, .45 Colt, or 45 Colt loads in 45 Winchester Mag brass in moon clips.
With all the big holes in it, it is surprisingly light for carry. If things get stinky, at least I have some variation in
ammo I can use.

I've shot em all in my 45 years in this hobby and I'll stick with a 1911 in .45 ACP. for the following reasons:
1. Won't blow out my eardrums
2. Won't blind me in the dark with muzzle flash.
3. Most accurate semi auto round I've shot. (.38 super and 10mm are on par in this category but see 1&2)
4. Your .38 may not expand but my .45 will never shrink.

That's my take on it Brutus out.;)

Only one would mean I'm packing it into my shaving kit as they transport me to the old folks home, so I need something small enough to fit in the toiletry bag, light enough for my decrepit old butt to carry, small enough to hide, easy to shoot, enough capacity to make sure my shaky hands can afford a few misses...

I guess my Glock 19 MOS will do. Better pack some batteries for the optic...
