No 12ga pump? I'd take a SIG P226ST in .357SIG with one of those Birdman magazines. :)

I was faced with this once. A pit bull was running loose in my neighborhood. It got between me and my 4 y.o. neice. Fortunately I had my 12 gauge handy. A load of 00 buck took care of the problem. I don't know what pistol round would be best. However, I can offer one small piece of advise. If the animal is coming directly toward you, drop to your knees before firing. This will put your shot on the same level as the animal and you won't overshoot. Hopefully you won't ever have to put this into practice.

Yet another story from sunny Germany :) Some GSG-9 guys once raided an apartment where they encountered a rather PO'ed pitbull. The lead guy emptied his Glock (9mm JHP) in the dog without even slowing him down. He managed to step aside and let his colleague finish the job with a shotgun.

I guess there's a huge difference between casually shooting a feral dog that you happen to come across and shooting a mutt that is actually charging you.

Adrenaline and all...Some friend of mine who hunts told me that if a deer is unruly and frightened it will most likely still run quite a distance after being hit, even if the same shot would drop an unsuspecting animal dead in its tracks.

Regards,

Trooper

I don't have the choice most of the time so I would use my carry gun: 5" 1911. Ideally, an Ithaca Auto & Burglar.

Walther PPK in .22lr. Put the bullet in the ground in front of the German shepard and he made an instant 90 degree left turn and headed for the next county. After that, I carried a 1911 while working in the garden.

Oh, and when you're hot and sweaty, don't take off your shirt and hang it over your PPK.
