With a budget of 2500.00 I too would go for a Colt Gold Cup. Then I'd run 2 or 300 rounds through it and then send it off to my 'smith for an accuracy job and any other bells and whistles I want added. The remainder of the money would go for ammo and/or components plus a good leather holster.
I have a Dan Wesson Point Man 7. It is an excellent target gun and a great quality handgun overall - and mine is a rare one in .40 S&W. This thing shoots lights out and should be even better in .45 Auto. I wanted an accurate range gun in .40 S&W to use for testing my reloads and it turned out to be very accurate. If I remember correctly, I paid under $1200 for it.
I am leaning towards a Les Bear Premier II w/ accurizing package, or an Ed Brown Executive Target like esheato has. From what I have heard the Ed Browns have the edge over the Les Bears in overall quality.
You know you're getting old when you prefer 1911 "centerfold" pics to those in Playboy! I'll soon be getting a cheap Ruger SR 1911......but there's nothing wrong with looking. Someday if I live long enough...........
I am quite fond of my Les Baer Premier II Tactical with the 1.5" guarantee. It came in a couple of hundred dollars under your budget. I chose the tactical over the standard because of the Bear-coat finish.
The gun brings a smile to my face every time at the range.
Based on the very positive experience I've had with my two Ed Browns, it would be an Ed Brown Classic Custom for me ... the only tough decision to make would be whether I wanted the stainless finish, Gen III finish or a mixture of both! Obviously I'd have to exceed the budget a little, but if I'm going to spend $2,500 I might as well spend $3,000 and get exactly what I want.
