If you could only have One Cap & Ball Revolver...

While my heart tells me my 1851 Navy, I would probably opt for a 1858 Remington... especially for self defense. The ability to quickly change an empty cylinder for a full one would be very handy. Also the ability to carry a conversion cylinder and be able to shoot .45 Colt or .45 ACP (depending on what caliber cylinder you opt for) would be pretty handy.

For all those uses, they don't make one I'd consider. I'd hunt with nothing short of my Old Army, but it's a tad big for carry. I could carry my 5.5" Navy, but I wouldn't hunt with it. Besides, my 3" .357 magnum works a lot better, more accurate, more powerful, smaller, lighter...:D

I have two spare cylinders for my Pietta '51 and can change 'em out pretty fast. The ONE problem the Remington doesn't have is I have to hold the barrel while I do it, a bit of a pain. The big problem I see with MY '51 is accuracy, only about 4-5" at 25 yards accurate. That''s okay for defense, but sux for any sort of hunting.

a Pair of ROA SS 5-1/2" adjustable sights

One 1859 Sharps Berdan

One Howda in 8 Gauge

One USN Dive Knife

an assortment of birdshot and ball with a big bag of FFF it will work in all guns and I Dont want to get too wieghted down.

I guess you didn't read the topic title...If you could only have One Cap & Ball Revolver...

Welcome to the forum anyway! :p

Let me find the book with the info, and I will quote it in thread form.

I agree with the Butch & Sundance post. Carry 'em all.
Sure am glad this thread is hypothetical. I'd hate to be limited to one.
If I ever find a good deal on a stainless ROA, I'm jumping on it. Provided I can afford to buy it, of course. I've wanted one since I was a kid. It's a hoss.
Then again, I've always wanted a Colt Walker, '69 Mach 1, Hemicuda, '71 Mach 1, '72 Torino GT, '63 Sting Ray, Dart GTS, Demon 340, '72 Satellite Sebring, '67 Nova SS-327/4 speed, etc.
Still don't have any of them. It kinda bites, not being rich.

If any of the fine folks here would like to donate a Ruger Old Army to me, so I could carry/shoot it and decide that it could be my 1 and only C&B revolver, I'd be more than happy to oblige them.:D

I would have to pick my 2nd mod Dragoon carried in a shoulder rig. I shoot it pretty well and carried in this manner it would be alot more comfortable than belt carry.

I do believe that most of us (me too...) have seen that scene in Mad Max ..Thunderdome too many times.... where Max checks his weapons in at the door to Barter Town, with the fat man. One just ain't going to hack it.

In a Post Apocoloyptic World where we wind up threading around on foot, down desolate highways, surrounded by wastelands, we would need a shopping cart to lug around all the "just in case" stuff.

I would opt for a Custom Pietta copy of the Remington New Model Army .44 caliber w/ 5.5" barrel.

Relatively small for easy holster time but enough punch to take care of a BG if need be & accurate enough to take game with in resonable distances.

I'd make this choice...
My own 1858 Remington NMA .44, 1865 Rogers&Spencer .44, and the 20th Century ROA .44...would all go with me the ROA being listed last due to it's heavier weight only.
All three are tack drivers ... but I would choose the 1858 NMA or the 1861 Rem Old Army due to accuracy, reliability, and weight over all.
