If you had the choice of a Glock 17 OR Springfield XD9, what and why would you choose it? Take into consideration that the pistol will only be used for IDPA and PPC matches ONLY!

Thanks in advance for the input!

Personally, _I_ would pick a Glock 17. I own a Glock 23 and a 26. The 23 is my carry gun and it's a joy to carry and shoot. XDs, on the other hand, left me very impressed. I think they are ugly as sin (this coming from a Glock lover...) and I don't like the way they fit my hand.

That said, you really should make the decision yourself. Preferably after handling and shooting both. The two are so close is quality and features that there is no particular reason to pick one over the other. It's not as if you are comparing SIG and Hi-Point. More like Chevy vs. Dodge. It all comes down to personal preference...

This pic is a good example of the different generations.

Note the plain jane 1st generation.
Checkering (sort of) on the 2nd generation.
Finger grooves and light rail on the 3rd generation.

So the only difference between the 3 generations, is the checkering/finger groves OR is there more on the inside?
I'm new to the Glock & XD platform. I've always been a die hard 1911 man. Go easy on me with all of my questions.

I vote for Glock 17.

While many swear by their Springfield X ?, there have been stories about extractor failures, rust0matic, etc.

I'm sure these problems are fixable and probably HAVE been fixed. But I held a Springfield at a gun show, and it felt definitely cheesy, compared to the proven Glock.

Also, the bore axis on the Springfield is higher than on the Glock, I have always liked a lower bore axis. Just personal preference. Your choice is between the proven, and the yet tol be proven, IMHO.

The Glock's Tennifer finish has decades of performance behind it.

I like my Glock, but I wish if FELT more like an XD...somebody in Croatia actually looked at a human hand before they designed their gun's grip!

I've owned several Glocks(over a dozen) and currently own an XD-9.Buy what feels best in YOUR hands. My vote goes with the Springfield.tom.

You should really get your hands on both and make the decision for yourself. They are both fine guns.

I personally prefer the grip angle on the XD over the Glock. I have rather short fingers, and the smaller grip on the XD suits me better.

The Glock 17, hands down. It has been there, and done that. You would be hard tested, to find a more proven pistol.

Find the one that fits YOUR hand and buy it.I've owned over a dozen Glocks, trying to get one to fit me,but without avail. No Glock bashing here. They're nice pistols.I did purchase an XD-9 and it works for me.YMMV.tom.

I'd go with the Glock. Try out a G17 first. My hands are skinnier so the G19 fits my hands better. The finger grooves on the full size pistols are too spaced out and I end up with a weird grip.

Buy the slightly longer Glock 34.
slightly more comfortable to shoot,
mine is quite a bit more accurate than the model 17s I have shot,
better trigger,
takes the same magazines,
and, as an added bonus, it still fits in the box.

Grip sz. would be the determining foactor for me.
XD seems decicdely less to my lg. hands.
Don't realy care for the Glock "hump" but have become accustomed to it so it's what I do use in IDPA.

In case you wern't aware, XD's have to shoot in ESP while you can shoot the Glock in both ESP & SSP......

I own both and if I had to get rid of one, it would be the XD. In fairness though, I've had the G17 for over 10 years so I'm lot more comfortable with it.

Another vote for the Glock 17!

In my opinion the XD is an absolutely overrated pistol. Time will tell, but I bet it'll never match a Glock.

Dear F15H: You've stated you'll use the pistol for IDPA and PPC matches only. Personally, I cannot think of a better full-sized self-defense 9 mm pistol for home defense or duty than the Glock.

That's my personal opinion after having shot and handled numerous other pistol designs in the past...

I'd take the XD9 for the simple reason that the grip fits me much better than the G17. This is of course a subjective point and will vary depending upon who you ask.
