The Remington 870! I don't have one but I have both Winchester and Mossberg pumps. 870 hands down.

For almost four decades the choice has been hands down simple for me- a Remington 870. Simple, dependable, versatile, the epitome of functionality and reliability- 'nuff said.

Jeff,
I've gotta disagree. I've never had a misfeed or extraction problem with any of my three Rem 870's but have seen a number of malfunctions with autos. Normally it's a hunting gun used for Trap or Skeet which isn't tuned for light loads.

The problem some folks have with pumps is they don't use full force when racking the slide. They try to ease the round in rather than just slamming it the way an auto would chamber or extract -- full force with no hesitation. I don't have those problems and further my 870's aren't bothered a bit by any load that they can chamber -- extra light target loads or heavy hunting loads, buck and slugs. All of the above cycle just fine in a pump.

I agree with Duke of Lawnchair:

Benelli M1S90 18.5 inch barrel, rifle sights, with 4 shot extension.

A few words to the wise:

If you are going to buy a semi-auto, please don't do like me and spend buttloads of money on all of the other semi-auto shotguns in the world. If you spend money on the Benelli the first time, you only cry once :).

Just my .02,

Remy 870 MM ;)

Am I the only one with a Benelli M1 Entry (14" NFA short barrel shotgun) in the closet?

Very handy size, pistol grip for possible one-hand holds, surefire fight on the forend. Very reliable.

Whoa! For once in my life I'm running with the crowd! 870 it is.

Two words: Track record.

It's a dirty little secret, but the semi-auto is usually more reliable than the pump. The pump takes considerable practice to avoid a jam.

Hmmm. Watch a match sometime and see who has more malfunctions.

HINT: It ain't the pumpers.

I just couldn't leave my faithful companion with out even one vote.
S&W 3000
I know that is a metric 870 but mine has served me well of over two decades. Sadly they are out of production (another great management decision by S&W) so it I ever need a new one it will have to be an 870.

Wow, thanks guys. I was very happy with my 870 mag. express until you had to go and show your pictures of the marine mag and that Mk. I. My wife will be very unhappy with all of you. Very purdy. Hope you're happy.

I cheated.

I removed the wood buttstock/forend combination and put a SpeedFeed Monte Carlo synthetic on mine. I had trouble lining up on those tall rifle sights, and the Monte Carlo made sight alignment for my mug a snap. ;)

The Marine Corps has switched at least some of their Mk. I's over to a collapsible buttstock. So I don't feel too bad taking some functional license with my version.

SpeedFeed Monte Carlo synthetic
Magic words. I've been wondering how to get a wooden MC stock to look right with a Surefire forend. That will do it. Thanks.

Remington 870 pump action. It's the gun I'm most familar with.

There was a time when it would have been a close contest between the 870 and the 11-87P. My 11-87 ran like a freight train for years, but finally went down during its fifth shotgun class. I now have close to 2000 rounds through it, but I simply don't trust it anymore for defensive use.

Make mine an 870.

Denny

I"d just skip it, go with a good M4

and practice a lot more with the ccw pistol. It's a lot more likely to actually BE there when needed, in "normal times". If it's shtf, I don't want to be limited to a shotgun's range, penetration, mag capacity, and so on.
