Single Shot Shotguns for Defense

I guess on a per shot basis, it'd probably beat throwing rocks.
But rocks have both a higher rate of fire, AND far lower cost. :)

If you're serious about protecting yourself, your loved ones and your home; figure out a way to scrape up the money for a weapon that'll give you a better chance to survive if a home invasion leads to a gunfight.

It doesn't really matter what Clint Smith can do on a shooting range when nobody's shooting back. What matters is what YOU can do when it's 3:00 AM and you're half asleep, scared spitless and confused. I'm not saying everyone needs the latest offering from Noveske or Daniel Defense, but decent pump shotguns can be found for less than $150.

Read "The Grapes of Wrath", those folks were way poorer than any American is today, but even when the Joad family was literally starving, they still hung onto their lever action rifle.

of course, the other option is to practice enow to always hit what you aim at, with your first shot.
i think the emphasis on large capacity mags is for people who refuse to practice.
i shoot lots, til my gun is an extention of my arm.
i need only one shot.

But the OP was stating that if one was severely limited in the funds department and all that could be acquired was a single barrel, I think that's fine.

Except a Maverick is about the same price as the single shot and those things always seem to beat the snot out of folks, especially shooting any decent type of HD load. Sees funny how many thinks a single shot is OK, but many will opt for a 15 round handgun for CCW......
Anyone recommend a single shot handgun for CCW? I doubt it.... ;)

I see a serious problem getting stuck in an all out gunfight with a single shot shotgun.

Don't fight for your life with one hand tied behind your back give yourself a better chance.

It's not impossible to use one for defence but why limit yourself with a single shot it you don't have to.

Otherwise I love single shot shotguns for their simplicity and overall handiness. I am a fan of them.

The Maverick 88 is a solid basic shotgun. "Tactical" 8 pellet "00B" have payloads under 1 ounce and with a nominal 1145 FPS, (velocity from a 30" industry test barrel), have less recoil than a 20 gauge skeet load.
