If You Had To Pick ONE Rifle Powder...

Here's the real question, if I pick only one am I stuck with market price, and availability or is a pallet dropped off at my garage once a month. I could get by with varget but the two limiting issues aren't small ones.

Since 98% of my rifle loading is for my collection of 1800's single shot rifles, my favorite powder has always been H4198 or IMR4198. Since Hodgdon 4198 is gone, I just bought another 8 lb. keg of IMR last year. It is very low chamber pressures, and mild pressure curve in my old rifles, plus extremely accurate. Often chamber pressures are below equal BP pressures for the same cartridge.

No, you’re thinking of the past when we lived in the land of plenty. In the new America you have to search for what you can afford that’s available and make it work. Be grateful you can buy pounds. They might decide to start selling powder in 6/8/10oz. cans again. I do remember those days and I don’t miss them.

Back then the price (<$2.00) for the can of powder, these days that want even cover the cost of the container. TrailBoss is (was if you could find it) sold in 10 oz bottles, it's so light and fluffy donuts.

Ramshot Competition and IMR 700X are also sold in less than one pound quantities. I like both and will say they both go a LONG WAY.

Powder? Memories following Sandy Hook. How many remember the old song, if you can't be with the one you love, love the one your with. I guess it holds true for powder, primers, bullets, brass and everything else. :)
