Full auto choice
For reasons of practicality, the Thompsons leaves a lot to be desired. Granted, it has a fast cyclic rate of fire, but it is STILL a pistol cartridge. It has neither the speed or range to be a decently effective weapon beyond 100-150 ft.
On the other hand, AK clones using the 7.62x39 cartridge have a higher powered round with better ballistics and at least double the range of the Thompsons.
As it is a "man-carried" weapon, it has advantages of mobility over heavy machine guns like the Ma Duece, or some kind of Gatling gun.
It's also a LOT less expensive so you can buy more ammo.
