When I went to the pawnshop to buy the 3" 66, I spied a LNIB 585-5. I have a real weakness for nice blue Smiths without internal locks, so to work a better deal, I made an offer for the 66 and the 586... and both followed me home... I'm not a fan of Hogue rubber grips, so I replaced the grips with some Ahrends and did some pics. Also following are some pics of my 586-no dash.

Does your 586-no-dash have the factory recall modification? Should have the letter M stamped inside the crane. If not, check out with S&W.

Preacherman, what is this factory recall modification? I have a 586 no dash no.

Preacherman... no it doesn't, but it was fired before I bought it and I've fired it a bit and the firing pin bushing has no signs of receeding, so it may be one of the ones that's ok without the modification. Someday I will probably have the modification done just in case, anyway. Send it along with another gun or two that I'm sending to the Performance Center.

I've got a 4" 686-4 and 4" 681 going to the PC next month to have 3" barrels put on them, so I may include the 586 in the box for the mod.

Riley... on some 686, 586 no dash and -1 models (perhaps 581, 681 also) the firing pin bushing in the recoil shield was undersized and shooting the gun pushed the bushing back into the hole... sometimes jamming up the gun. THe modification was to put in a proper sized bushing to prevent this from happening. Some of the guns didn't have any issues with this, but S&W offered free modification anyway. They still will modify them at no charge, but I don't know if they will still pick up shipping costs or not... anyone know on that?

Can you tell by looking? Here's a photo:

DHart,

Painfully beautiful as always.

Do the Spegel grips fill in the round butt? Normally I love the look of a 4" round butt, but those grips really make that revolver.

Perfectly gorgeous.

With the longer (4") barrel, I find the target stocks a lot more comfortable. With the round butt grips the frontal weight of the long, full lug barrel makes the butt want to roll upward with muzzle going downward, whereas a square butt stops that downward roll. I agree, the smooth target stocks look superb on this gun.

Yep. I just inquired about getting the mod to my 586. They sent me instructions on how to ship the gun and "bill to recipient". Can even have Fedex come pick it up or I can drop it off. No more excuse for procrastinating on this.
