S&W is bringing back the 586 and being offered in both six- and seven-shot models. It unfortunately has the stupid lock, but it has wood stocks and its a nice looking piece anyways! I already have a 586 no dash but I might get the 3" 7-shot L-Comp model with a Front Ramp Tritium Dot Night Sight.

Oh my. That is exciting!

Not sure if the price of a new one will be low enough to tempt people away from the value of the originals, but still it's exciting to have the options available!

Uhhhh.... I made the mistake of holding one today. My local pusher had it back behind the counter. I should learn NOT to ask if he has anything good behind the counter. Felt good and the bluing was very good, nice balance and natural pointer. Had me looking on GB for some early one's without the lock etc.

Who put that front sight on it? A blind monkey?
Possibly, but that's the compensated model, so the sight is pulled back to clear the blow hole.

For some strange reason they are popular, even w/ little .357s.

Thanks. I'm glad there is SOME reason for it being like that.

I haven't looked at many Smith & Wessons since they went past two digit model numbers.

I remember seeing a Jerry Miculek demo video where he mentions that he carries the comp'd short barrel 357. Helps a lot with muzzle snap using full tilt 357, but it will sear your face off if you're not careful..

My Taurus 44 tracker had the porting, and it helped a little with the muzzle jump, but I wanted something to take out a rattlesnake here and there, and maybe pop some annoying swallows building nest where they shouldn't :cuss:. I didn't do my homework, and found out later you can't use shot loads with the porting :cuss:.

Found the page at S&W. If I actually had the toy money to spare, it would be a hard choice between a 586 or a 27.

Ah, if only I had to make such a choice... :banghead:

My 4" no-dash has a few freckles and a little wear around the muzzle, but is still a beautiful gun. The trigger is amazing, as well. Quite a shooter. Here's to hoping the new ones are as nice as the old ones.

Nice to see they are bringing one of my favorites back. I have previously posted this pic of my 586 (no dash) which had the lug modified by the previous owner and was reblued by S&W back in the spring.
