If you were called to defend your town...

I wouldn't bring any of my stuff. Why put wear and tear on guns I paid for when I can just follow around guys who thought they could carry multiple long guns + handgun + multiple mags + hundreds of rounds of ammo? In no time at all, I'll be picking up everything I need for free from where they drop it.
I realize the thread is mostly in fun, but these insane load-outs are a recurring theme here. I think more than one fellow should try actually carrying that stuff even a couple miles. To make it easy, we won't even worry about you moving reasonably quietly, hitting/hugging the dirt, carrying anything else at all useful, etc. No...just go out and walk a few miles at a brisk pace and then get back to us with your revised list.

If I were tapped to defend my town, I guess I'd have to bring everything I could carry, because most of these goobers around here would be crying in their Post Toasties until Fema showed up with some bottled water and MREs and reassuring words. Of course, if there really were a situation in which my town needed defending, I would guess the Feds to be the most likely culprit.

And I don't have any efficient people killing type guns handy, so I guess my town would have to wait till I picked off all the enemy with a Ruger #1 and a 30-30.

Lever actions in the right hands have been doing the job for a very long time. Lever actions in .30-30, .45-70 etc are nothing to sneeze at

Joe has it exactly right. When people talk about buying huge fighters to use as "combat knives" I always point out that the South was littered with huge bowie knives once Southern troops started marching- and this was in an age of single-shots, so a sidearm was much more valuable than in today's age or multishot autoloaders.

Being able to stay near a vehicle changes everything, but if you don't have one, some supplies, clothes, and camping materials trump a second longarm (really. Have you ever marched carrying two longarms plus at least 45 more pounds of gear?)!

Yes, actually, an M-60 and M-16. Didn't go more than a few miles and no real ammo loadout. It was enough, though, for me to know I wouldn't want to do it again.
An that was just on the march. I didn't have to actually try and manouvre around with that in a combat situation, simulated or otherwise. I wouldn't even want to think about how much harder it would be in an urban combat situation.

and for whatever reason, there has been a call to muster the local citizen militia,

For example, to march on Mayor Fenty's office, to remove the tyrant and enforce the Court order. I would bring a MAK-90 kalashnikov with a 75 rd drum, so I can see him soil himself at the sight of it.

Indeed, My CZ 550 with my browning, ammo, and food water and I will be weighted down. Also since I would be fighting with a Bolt action (Best I have right now) I would be needing to move quick or be able to hide well.

Well seeing that I have a National Guard Armory in my town I presume it would be my AR. Or would I as a civilian be SOL getting any ammo from them??

If you were really defending your town, and the enemy wasn't the US military, I imagine they'd take your assistance quite highly...OR they'd run you off.

Either way, scavenge what you can from the dead and wounded.

I only read the first post but if this came to pass, then I'll prolly break out the AR-15 since

a) I'm totally out of shape and prolly couldn't hike more than a few miles if I broke out with a heavier M1A lol!
b) The AR-15 + ammo is much lighter and prolly more versatile given I live in an urban environment.

To answer the original question, I guess I'd take my AR carbine with the fluted 16 inch barrel. One 30 round magazine in the gun and six more in two GI pouches should be plenty. Don't know that I'd bring a handgun at all. If I was going to carry the extra weight, something tells me that more water or more ammo for the carbine would be better choices.

I'll join...

If a situation were to arise like this tomorrow, and it wasn't the kind of situation where high tailing to the inlaw's farm made more sense, I'd take what I have in the house, which is a Mosin-Nagant M28 with 100 rnds. of surplus heavy ball. I'd probably make a more affective human shield than a combatant at this point, though I'm working on it.

Military veterans would probably be called on first and armed up at local armories and put in command of citizen militia platoons. The plan of succession would probably go something like this:

National Guard
State Defense Forces in garrison
State Police
Sheriffs Department/City PD/Towns
Civil defense forces (prior service and citizen forces)

Most of the work would probably be done by the reserve guard (State Defense Forces) and everyone that can handle a weapon would be called on. The American Legion Posts also have several M14's as well.

So. 142 posts. Many of which involve multiple guns in multiple calibers and a combat load exceeding your own body weight.

Is there no honest man here to admit he'd hide in his basement and cry like a girl?

Most honest people would probably hunker down with their families and protect them as best that they can.

I'm into crying at sappy movies, not bad situations.

Matt, I've carried an M4 and a M225 cannon with bipod, M8 baseplate, and M64 sight, plus ALICE. These were the most physically challenging hours of my life. I dripped sweat (literally!) like a faucet was running off me.

Incidentally, I start hallucinating after about 40 hours of being pushed hard with this combat load. The ironic thing is combat was nothing like this, which is good, because I wasn't very combat effective when treated/led in this manner.

On the bright side, even very heavy rifles don't feel so heavy anymore.

I think the best plan(if you live on the coast) is grap a boat and if you don't have one hotwire it fill up the tanks and go to puerto rico and have a beer and relax on the beach

I'd take my Maverick 88, plenty of slugs, several types of buckshot, and some of the beanbag rounds I've made. My .22 or .17hummer wouldn't be so effective.

hmm...I would think that ammo availability might be an issue...SO...

My Imbel FAL and her mags,
my Mauser in 308,
and my Beretta 92 if the need ever arose.

Well its getting to the point where im considering a loading kit for my .308. I would have to sit down and start with a load sheet and work up. Loading would be a necessity in a time such as this theoretical situation.
