It is essential that you not think of deterrence. Know if you have to protect yourself and use what you have at hand promptly. Mindset and will to defend yourself are vitally important. Indecision with any weapon is a bad thing.

Illinois law is unclear (to me) on knives.
I'm not a lawyer and I don't play one in tv but as I understand it, you can carry any blade length you would like as long as you don't intend to commit a crime. But there is substantial wording to get there, which actually means if you're being searched or the legality of your actions are in question they'll just charge you with possession of a weapon and let the judge figure it out. Crook county law I believe limits blade length to 2.5-3" . when I must travel into cook County (rarely happens) I bring a karambit with a 1" blade in a neck sheath. I believe it's legal and I am confident I could defend myself with it. I also adjust my handgun selection for heading into cook co. , same thing - law is clear as mud to me. No one has been able to tell me with any certainty if there is a magazine restriction for Chicago so I carry a 9 rd mag- in one of the most dangerous cities in the country / world. I've been to Chicago 2 times in the last 10 years - it's 45 miles away. Horrible place.
My brother in law is a LEO and has said that my benchmade 940 is illegal to carry (In the suburbs), I don't believe that's the case- he wouldn't charge anyone for that type of knife but thinks it's illegal. I regularly carry a full sized ka-bar or a glock knife and haven't ever had an issue. So from an Illinois guy who is always well equipped- the law is very difficult to interpret and even the LEOs aren't sure. Be careful and stay out of trouble.

While I do strongly agree with the indecision part, I may not legally be in the clear to use Deadly Force and there is the issue of the police arresting and charging me anyway and let the Court decide even if I was.

The person who tried to force himself into my apartment last after I refused to him in, I couldn't tell if he was armed or not since my door was blocking half my view, and due to severer hearing lose, I was reading his lips anyway.
