Nothing pumps you up more than seeing your kid succeed at something. Way cool!
I got my son into shooting at a young age as well. We used to shoot in a practical pistol competition put on by the range we use. Weekly matches Feb-Oct and a championship match in Oct. Lot's of fun.
Anyway, when he was 14, he won his class in the championship match. (shooting "C" class, but who cares) (Expert, A, B, C, D classes) He was the only junior in the match, so he was shooting against adults. I don't know who was more excited, him or me. (I was "A" class, didn't even place)
Keep your kid shooting. Find some freindly competitions for him to have fun with. Keep him interested. We found that the other shooters at the matches liked having the "kid" around. Helping him more than I could with his shooting technique, better loads, glitches with his gun, etc.
My son is nineteen now, and out in the world on his own, for the most part. He's impatiantly waiting to turn 21. That's when we agreed he could have "his" 1911 pistol, the one he won the match with.
