There is something about an FAL that keeps my looking at them every now and then. Well, it is another one of those "now and then" times again. I allready have an M1A scout which is a great rifle but I've been looking at the DSA STG-58C along with a DPMS LR-308 AP4. Now, I've heard the AP4 is a tack driver but there are a couple of things steering me away from it. The cost of the magazines too high and it just doesn't look right. I know the FAL isn't as accurate but, it is sexy as hell especially in a carbine length barrel. How long is the wait right now from DSA? I was entertaining the idea of looking into placing an order and are they worth the wait?.

Thanks, Flip.

Best bet for finding out waiting times and such is to contact DSA directly.

Remember though that everyone's gearing up for SHOT Shot '07 right now, so it might be hectic over there.

As for the carbine, you know you want one.

I checked last week and DSA is currently stating that the wait for SA58's is at least 12 weeks, with some configurations being much longer. I didn't ask about StG58's. My advice -- if you want one, stop shopping online and at gun stores and shows.

I have an SA58 Para Congo right now, and I periodically think about selling it (I'd rather have a fixed stock and long barrel). Then I pick it up, admire it, and remember how nicely it shoots. I'm gonna hang onto it.

I get that way with my M1A but, I change my mind every time I handle it.

I would do what I did. Call around to different shops within a couple hours of you until you find a shop that has what you want in stock.

Where are you going to get the ammo to feed it? Cheap .308 is very hard to find these days and is getting even more scarce. A semi auto battle rifle is going to be an expensive toy at close to $1 per round for commercial ammo.

You can get even commercial .308 online for fifty cents per round, give or take.

Is it more expensive than the surplus? Oh, yes, by a wide margin. But it's not exactly a dollar a round, either.

Cheap 7.62x39mm is because of Wolf steel cased stuff. Wolf makes steel cased .308, too, 'cept most rifle makers say using it voids the warranty.

Or you can reload. If you have a progressive setup, you could probably roll a couple hundred rounds of ammo in an hour.

There is Indian surplus out there, but I've heard nothing but bad about Indian ammo. FWIW.

"Where are you going to get the ammo to feed it?"

It'll have to fight the M1A over the 59 battle pack's of South African I have here at the house.

Using components from Cabelas, I reload .308 for about 30 cents a shot. Granted battle packs of SA were cheaper back in the day, but 60 bucks for 200 will work.
