It looks as though Ol’ Bonz will be getting his Christmas wish. I have found a Judge who will sign off on my CCW, provided I show proof of completing a training class. So to celebrate, I decided to build me a 1911. I have always wanted to, and what better time than now?

So, I just ordered a SS "classic" 1911 (not A1) receiver and Damascus slide from Caspian Arms. I'm excited, but man, a 6 month wait for the slide, DAMN! I’m getting it with the "Classic" serrations, which are the fine, vertical cuts. I’m also going to have them do a carry bevel on the slide. I’m not getting any checkering or anything, as I like my 1911s smooth. I just think that they handle better this way. I want a wide spur type hammer (I have never liked the “combat” hammers), and a smooth, long trigger, and flat main spring housing.

I want to use Trijicon nite sights. Does any one know the best cuts for these? Also, I'm unsure about finishes. Anyone have any Ideas?

Thanks-

Those slides look great! 6 months.....ouch!

Good luck on the project. I wish I had even the basic know how to build one.

DogBonz, are you building it yourself, or having them make one to your specs?

By the way, congrats on getting a NJ permit. Do you have similar success on collect calls to God? I have a few questions and requests once you get Him on the line . . .

The stuff from Caspian is worth the wait ;) Plus, when it's all said & done, you'll have a sweet 1911 to go w/ that carry permit :D

I know...

The judge is sort of a relative. He is my cousins uncle. But I gave him som advice about which stock to buy last Christmas, and he did ok on it, so now he likes me. He called for some more advice, so i said ok. Thats when I told him that I asked him if there were any tricks to getting a carry permit. He said that if I took a carry class (CYOA), that he would sign the forms for me. I was like YEA!

If you are going to use Trijicon sights have Caspian dovetail the front of the slide to take a dovetail-style front sight. It will be much easier to install, less likely to come off, and less likely to crack the the insert during installation.

I'm going by memory, but I believe that EGW makes a top-quality 1911A1 style wide-spur hammer.

If you don't have one, order a Brownells catalog (www.brownells.com) and window shop for the components you'll need.
