Hello I have a ruger P90 in .40 cal. And I recently saw a Springfield 1911 in a store and I liked the way it felt. What are some good 1911's around 500-700$. The springfield was for 509$ (new) any reason to stay away from that manufacturer (Springfield Armory)

From my experience, the Mil spec Springers are good. Check the sticky in the gunsmith forum to see a torture test of one by Tuner.

I depends what you want, but I could never live with a mil spec 1911 unless it received a beaver tail, SA mag well and night sights. Thats just me though.

Good luck with your search.

I second the Colt recommendation. I picked one up on the Firing Line for $549 shipped. NIB NRM Gov't SS.

Best overall value and solid platform to shoot right out of the box or a stable platform fora custom build.

I know your can't go wrong with the Colt but hear good things about the springers.

I have the double-stack GI, and my brother has the parkerized GI. They're both good pistols. I am in the process of doing some upgrades on mine to replace some of the guts that I'm less than thrilled with. 1911Tuner has been a huge help with this. Be real sure to read his threads. All of 'em.

If you want something decent as a first 1911 that you can both shoot and learn on, I say go for the Springer. If you want something to carry, and are willing to invest the time and money to learn a bit of smithing to bring it up to a high standard, go for the Springer. If you're looking for something super-tough or competition accurate out of the box, keep on walkin'.

^^ The GI's have horrible sights, it really is worth the upgrade to go to a mil-spec instead.

I'll chime in here with my standard defense of GI sights. I don't find them that bad for shooting, they're less snaggable, and the GI model Springfield can set you back $399 vs $500 for the Mil-Spec(depending where you shop).

If you don't have meaty hands that get bitten by the hammer, and don't mind smaller sights, the Springer GI model is pretty cool.

I've had nothing but good luck with Springfield 1911s. The GI and Mil Spec models are both good as is and make excellent base guns for full blown customs.

I picked up a very lightly used Colt LW Commander for $550 on Gunbroker. Shipping + transfer about equaled what I woulda paid in sales tax. You can find good used handguns on line if you look and buy from a reputable seller. I've done 1/2 a dozen purchases this way.

This summer I spent a week with Jim Garthwaite and built a LW Commander at his shop. We used a brand new Springfield frame (Caspian slide). The frame was great quality. I can't speak to the quality of a complete Springfield, the rest of the guns we put together that week used outsources parts from several companies.

I would not own a 1911.:cuss: Spend your money on a better handgun, such as a Spingfield XD, Hk, Glock, or Para Ordanance .45!

Hi there,

I bought a NIB Springfield G.I. Champion 3 days ago.

It is the 4th Springfield Armory 1911 that I have owned over the past 15 years and I must say that they are getting better.

I took it to the range the day after I bought it and ran only 100 rounds through it. It makes me look good!

Oh well I started looking and I want night sights I found someone selling a Kimber TLE 2 stainless for 800 says it's never been fired I don't think I've ever seen a nicer looking pistol I will pick it up in 2 weeks
