Why not use the weapon you seem very competent with? Words!

Lay it on them thick! Pour your heart into it and make sure that each of them is in tears when you're finished.

TraderJack:

You may be on to something...The timing would have to be just right...I'm a professional actor in one compartment of my life...Just finished 30 performances of As You Like It...I know how to do what you so elequently describe...I've done it to critical acclaim (if I do say so myself).

Explain to them as a group that since you love them all so very much that you have chosen to abide by their wishes and will no longer carry a weapon.

I'm not going to go that far - and it hasn't been requested that I do. I will (for now) refrain from CCW when I am with my grandson at home, and when I am in the homes of those that have declared them to be gun-free zones.

I have no solution for your problem, but living here in Illinois I actually wish I "had" a problem likes yours.

The latest:

My wife asked me to drive her to the airport to pick up her brother and drop them both off downtown to visit their father who is suffering from dementia. She knew without asking I would undoubtedly be CCW.

Along the way she pops out with:

"As far as the gun thing goes, we'd be better off just not arguing about it. I'm never gonna convince you that you're not Clint Eastwood - and you're never gonna convince me I'm Annie Oakley."

"Suits me...but it would be cool if you just tried shooting a little .22 revolver one time to see what it's like - it's fun."

"I don't know...it sounds like darts or something - and I never liked that."

"Ohhh...it's WAAAY funner than darts!"

And then today she starts talking about the time her Dad (who was a wild-man when he drank - which was usually) put a 30.06 in her hands and had her fire it off the beach in front of the cabin they had at the time. Definately not cool! The round could have gone anywhere (we are talking about a beach on a narrow inlet), my wife was a girl with absolutely no instruction or notion of the effects of recoil.

Then she reminded me of the HS graduation photo in which he had posed her with a drink in one hand and a revolver in the other.

"Was it loaded?"

"I don't know..."

"I sure hope not."

So this is the backround I'm working against. She was never exposed to any sensible, sober use of firearms. But maybe we're getting somewhere...slowly.
