My wife and I have been shooting for about 10 months now. My wife used to be against having a gun in the house, but she eventually came around to the idea that we need to be able to protect ourselves. We are getting our CHL soon.

The other night our daughter told my wife that someone tried breaking into her and her BFs apartment - actually got the lock opened somehow but luckily the chain was on and the BF was there.

Anyway the wife has informed me that our daughter and her BF are going to the range with us tomorrow. I feel good about this I think (?) but her BF grew up in a family with dad, mom, step mom, and other family member in local and federal law enforcement - he has grown up around guns at least but never really been into them for carry or hunting. Turns out they go with some of their friends family to a family ranch and my daughter has already shot an AR-15, Mac-14 (?) and something else I can't remember - boy was I jealous (and proud). she is 22. Hopefully she will take this seriously and get proper training - and will if we have anything to do with it.

I take my girlfriend shooting regularly (I'm 25, she's 21) and I teach her to shoot properly. Its not just something we both enjoy doing, but its also something that we both recognize as important to our own personal safety. Kudo's to you for supporting that!

She should be careful of such things. I'm told that when my older sister was in high school one of her boyfriends stopped by while she was helping to castrate pigs. The way my brother tells it after seeing the smile on her face when she performed the surgery the guy left and never talked to her again. :(

Mac-14 (?)
Perhaps a Ruger mini-14?

that sounds like a good quality time... self defense is a fundamental human right... your wife should understand that.. its also a good hobby

Please tell me you have custom targets with the 10 ring located around the scrotum. I'll buy some off you if you do. My old man used to do this. He would take the "date" into the basement and put 2 cylinders into a 2-3" group with his left hand at about 7y. He'd then let the BF shoot to see how difficult that was. The rest of the night he did everything right handed. Usually the BF didn't notice this so as they left for the date my dad would say 2 things, I'm right handed and have her home by 11.

Good to see they are out shooting. Are you going to be doing handguns as well? I'd think they'd be better off using that than a rifle in a house b&e type situation.

I hope her boyfriend is able to teach her how to shoot. Just because someone can do something doesn't mean that they can teach it. A lot of shooters also are big on gun ownership but don't spend much time at the range.

They need a better lock and a wedge under the door to the apartment. There are scores of threads in S&T here that start out "Someone tried to get in so what gun do I need" that are answered "First you need to concentrate on preventing people from getting in before you worry about what gun to get". Help them harden their apartment so that no one can get in without waking them up and giving them time to get to the weapon of their choice.

Why wouldn't you feel good about them going to the range? It's a great family activity as long as everyone has fun and stays safe. Never underestimate the foolishness of a young man, or dad, "showing off" for the GF/daughter. Make sure that safety and good technique are followed by all, including the BF.

Hardening my apartment has been an ongoing goal as well. Definitely the quickest, easiest, most important change to make.

Glad to hear they got the wake-up call without any of the bad consequences. Many are not so lucky.

Hso has a really good point.

Shooting is fun as you have seen and shooting with the fam is even more fun. I feel very lucky to have grown up in a house with lots of guns in it and having been able to shoot for years starting at age 5. My wife had never shot anything until she met me and now she really enjoys chasing pop cans with her mk11 ruger .22.

There's a huge difference. Punching holes in paper or cardboard targets and enjoying it does not indicate anything weird. Intentionally inflicting pain on animals and removing their testicles may be necessary for safety or other practical reasons, but enjoying it a bit too much is an indication that you don't want to be anywhere near that woman.

A better lock might not be doable, most apartments won't let you change the locks. That being said, there are a number of things you can buy that allow you to secure the door much more securely than a chain will, that can be put into place without any permanent installations or holes in the wall or door.

I have taken just about every girl that I have dated to the range at some point or another. My Fiance wants an old fashioned double barrel with exposed hammers and the like. First time I took her out, she did a full mag dump with my slr-95 and loved my Smith 19-3 with magnum loads. I knew she was a keeper!

My son-in-law grew up in the big city and was never around guns until he started seeing my daughter. He actually asked for my daughters hand in marrige during a range trip.
